Okay. Time to fess up. Who has read them all so far?
I haven't read a darn one yet. I probably will once the series
is over.

I did!
And if you love the tv series... The books raise it to another
whole level!
I read them long before the first season on tv, so I was not
that much impressed... but still find the series very good.
Maybe the fact that the writer is involved in production helps
some...
Now, if only the 6th book came out... ::)

I have read all except the last one. I decided to reread the
series since I started the series a long time ago. There are
some things I never noticed the first read through like the
foreshadowing at the very beginning with the dead direwolf.
I am halfway through the second book and still haven't gotten
any indication that Renly is gay although Martin said that he
made that clear in the novels. Foppish, yes. But, I haven't
seen anything that would explictly make him gay.

You never will. It's only implied in the books since none of the
pov characters are privy to such things. The same can't be said
of the show.

I have read all the books.
Didn't really take notice of Game of Thrones until the first
season was on DVD. I got it from my local library to see what
the hoopla was all about, and then decided to start reading the
books. I ended up loving them both.
I am anxiously awaiting book 6 as well.
Kepp, I'd go ahead and start reading the first book. The novels
provide details that make much of what happens in the show make
more sense, or include characters that on the program. There's
also GRRM's descriptions of people, places, and things that
don't match the GoT. I love the more flamboyant Daario Naharis
than this guy. (The other guy was more true to book character in
my opinion, but there was a scheduling conflict that caused a
recast. )

I thought people simply didn't like Season 3 Daario, so they
replaced him. I don't agree with the change or the choice to
bring in the guy from Nashville (& Orphan Black), but what can
you do.

I don't even see the implication in the novels (yet). He
appears foppish; but, no hint of being gay. In the TV series,
other characters made references to it, i.e. calling him a sword
swallower or perferrring Loras to his wife. So far, I haven't
seen the same in the novels.

I also don't advise holding off on the books until the series is
over. As others have said, the books add a lot more detail &
backstory to the series. If you are worried about spoilers, you
can safely read the first 3.
Season 1 = Book 1
Season 2 = Book 2
Season 3 = 1/2 of Book 3
Season 4 = 1/2/ of Book 3
I am curious how the producers are going to handle the next
season since Book 4 & Book 5 are simulataineous with the PoV
characters mutally exclusive between the two books.

I've read each of the books multiple times.

Well, there is a spoiler involving a certain character's
resurrection in the Epilogue of Book 3. It hasn't been revealed
in the show yet and probably won't be until Season 5...or maybe
tonight's episode.
