Diy Led Driver
By: nessprojects Date: May 30, 2014, 5:27 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I was visiting my father the other day and noticed he was
throwing out a 150w outside flood light....Cogs started turning
and I rescued it.
My objective was to build a 12v flood light for the side of my
shed but at an absolute minimum of cost....anything that was in
my junk box could be used.
Gutted this light and decided 3 1w led beads would work being
equivalent to about 20w-30w lamp....Any light in pitch black
darkness is a godsend.
Plan is to couple this to my solar controller for "on at
dusk-off at dawn".
It is not a finished project yet but just a on-going project but
here is the led driver I will be building into the floodlight.
Circuit might be of use to others.

@cg
As you have always said..."a picture says a thousand words".
Only thing I have done is give the aluminium a coat of black
paint at the moment.

Been pre-occupied with personal things lately but I have decided
to spend a little money on this project and buy a 9-12v 10w led
module to fix in this floodlight. I have just got to wait for
the modules to arrive.
Don't know what current I will drive it at yet but they are good
for about 1000ma, I may try at about 600-800ma just to save a
little juice.

True....there are many routes I could take, I did say I wanted
to use junk box items but after noticing I could get a 10w led
for 1.20 I decided to splash out. ;D
You can get 12v floodlights for about 6-7 so I am not going
crazy with this project.
Its just a sense of achievement.

Going to take out the reflector and mount the led straight onto
the aluminium back then probably paint the inside with silver or
white paint.
here is a link to what I have ordered (3 of them).

very cool @ ness..to many ideas..i 'm interested in this out
come... i want to make artificial light with a few of these.. to
jump start a solar panel, charger an super capacitor bank 300uf..
a solar Self-oscillation artificial light system..

Well I received my 10W leds from China and fitted one into the
floodlight, Wow they are very bright.
Had to butcher the reflector a little to fit it but Oh well,
these things have to be done now and again.
Just got the driver to build now which will be switchable from
low output to high, low being switched on by my diy solar switch
and high, well just in case I need extra light. ;D
First picture is the led floodlight.
Second picture is just a bonus....Taken tonight at Midnight !.

Yeah its really nice to see in the summer but not so good in the
winter with only about 5-6hrs of daylight, Very bleak. Currently
getting around 18hrs 20mins between sunrise and sunset but alas
it is on its way down now.

Built the driver for this 10w led today....Its a 2 stage light
output.
Low output pulls about 100ma from the battery which will be used
on a dusk to dawn system, This can be adjusted with a different
value resistor.
High output pulls about 950ma which is just for that extra light
you may need.
All I got to do is fit the driver in the floodlight, add a
switch for low/high then install.....Looking good.
