Old Guy RC

Back in the 90's before kids I used to play with small radio
controlled park flyers. I was terrible at radio control until I
found how relaxing and easy rudder only control was. My
favorite plane was what I called "The Yellow Plane" The
equipment wasn't very light so I built very light models to
house the heavy gear. Flights were about 6 minutes on the
nicads. I didn't have motor control so the motor would cutout
at about 5 minutes and then I would just glide in for a landing.
I lived in Boston and there weren't many open areas to fly in.
The little plane could be packed in a small case and I took it
to CA to fly in Santa Cruz and Sacramento.
One beautiful day I was surrounded by a pack of eager and
interested young kids. I forgot to turn on the receiver! They
were fascinated with the little plane as it flew off over
Cambridge and then towards Newton and over the horizon.
It's been cold this winter and I was surfing the net and found a
great bunch of guys at www.flitetest.com. They inspired me to
pick up the hobby again. The equipment is way better and way
cheaper. They have developed a system of swappable airplane
plans, made of foam board and the power pod can switch into a
different plane in a minute.
The plans I am drawing are not only swappable but convertible
from the "Yellow Plane" old time rudder only trainer, to some
WWI biplanes that I like. Just a few small mods and you can
create a SE5A, Nieuport 17, DR VII, or others. These planes fly
slow and don't go to pieces if you smack them. A person could
add elevator if they wanted, but the beauty is simplicity and
relaxing flights.
Each plane is made from free plans, 1 sheet of foam board, some
hot melt glue, bamboo skewers, and Popsicle sticks. Took me 1
hour to build the Yellow Plane. The radio, motor and gear is
about $95, but that gear can be used in all the planes.
What do you think? Have you tried RC?

That would be hilarious. You could blame the plastic pilot.
There are some amazing little devices now. Tiny cameras that
mount on the plane and live time transmit back. This makes it
like you are in the cockpit and makes bomb dropping more
accurate. These little cameras are $57 bucks.

Only one thing to comment on, Built and flown a couple of planes
but why is it that when you loose control of the darn thing it
always finds a rock, building or fence post to hit even if you
are in the middle of an open field ?. ;D
@Lynx, FPV (First person view), Never tried it but bet its
great.

Yes, those are the day ending flights. That's why I started
making models very light, so they wouldn't fly so fast and crash
so hard. My Yellow Plane survived all sorts of things, mostly
baseball field backstops. Here is a cool video of an FPV
(first person view) over Cristo Redento. Now we can see how
much fun soaring birds must have.

Fantastic video and even managed to go through the clouds.
Well I have got to say that I am just a novice plane flyer and
made the beginners mistake of making the wrong plane to learn
with. The plane I made was a jet type pusher plane with no
dihedral on the wings (big mistake), spent 4 minutes in the air
then concluded with about 4 hours with skewers and a glue gun.
:'(
Here is a good site to build your own foam board planes,

@ lynx :- Just curious as to whether the yellow plane was a
'Piper Cub' as I have one but I am too scared to fly it. :-[
Has anyone tried these 'quad copters' out ?, Fancy trying one
but don't know what they are like.
Why is it that the nerves go to pot as soon as you fly planes.
:o :o

The Yellow Plane is based on what are called Old Timers. Lots
of Dihedral, upturned wing tips, forward landing gear. Looks
sort of like a Piper Cub, but the design is such that the plane
flies itself. Those upturned wingtips cause the plane to right
itself automatically. You can just blip the rudder, let go and
the plane will level. Very easy to run a pattern.
I am a terrible pilot, and I always get confused and can't
handle more than one control at a time. That's why I like
rudder only. Controlling throttle is fine to climb, descend and
power off, but I don't constantly play with the throttle. With
rudder only and this type of plane you can still do some neat
maneuvers.

Here are some pics of two of the planes I built this weekend.
The red trim is red duct tape. I spray painted the Neiuport 17
with chrome spray paint and then used sharpies and some avery
label paper for the insignias. Both planes use less than a
sheet of foam board. The board is 3/16". A couple popsicle
sticks and bamboo skewers too.
The next step is building the power pod with motor, receiver
motor control battery all pre-wired. This pod then slides into
each plane and gets pinned across with a bamboo skewer.
Can you tell I am feeling a little cooped up this winter?
Shoveling 2-3 times a day isn't what I'd call fun.

HA.
those are cool.
Honestly.........are you more than one person???
You sound really calm on your video 's but doing all you do
must take mega vitamins or triple shots of exspresso.

I have a garden tractor. I wrap rope around the back wheels to
get traction so I can push snow with my blade. This is the first
year that the ropes have worn off and I had to replace them
today.
Ughh
