http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/row-zed/10-years-lionel-messis-greatest-10246237:
The similarities between Messi's solo goal and Diego Maradona's
famous, match-winning effort against England at the 1986 World
Cup are spooky. Both men ran for just over 10 seconds. Maradona
covered 62 metres, Messi 60. Both touched the ball 13 times and
beat six opponents.
The goals are virtually identical. The fact they were both
scored by diminutive, brilliant Argentinian numbers tens - and
that they are perhaps the two best goals of the last 30-odd
years - simply makes the resemblance all the more uncanny.

Okay . . .
This was a wounded animal (FC Barcelona) some knowledgeable
(here?) being kicked when it was down (experts too, myself
unhappy with their inconsistency all season). It was an epic,
entertaining back and forth sporting battle by arguably the
biggest and most storied rivalry in team sport:

This isn't the Superbowl. This is the Superbowl times 4
worldwide, North Americanos! Please google El Clasico.
Sergio Ramos sent off with a reckless tackle on Messi. One can't
go in like that without touching the ball.
I'll leave it to later when I come down however rational I may
be now:
LIONEL MESSI! LIONEL MESSI! LIONEL MESSI! LIONEL MESSI! LIONEL
MESSI! (5 times for his 500th La Liga goal)
He actually took off his shirt in the Bernabeu and held it high.
I haven't seen it before this way of him.

What means this? However powerful you are (Real Madrid is a
veritable "murderers row" which eliminated Bayern Munich in the
Champions League . . my humble Leo . . . well . . . .
play like Barca if you dare (and I mean Barca too) . . . .

This was supposed to be Real Madrid finishing Barca off this
season. The pundits had said it was the end of the glory years
for Messi and his team. Mauled, a mouthful of blood down on the
pitch, his team glum, Leo produced one of his most stunning
goals to win El Clasico and an emblematic, solemn, silent
demonstration of the phenomenon when he stood there holding his
shirt up to the Madridistas as if to say, Remember me. I'm
Lionel Messi. #10. FC Barcelona. Which said it all for me. What
a way to "drop the mic."
But, hey, it's not all so serious:

His facial expression is great. So deadpan. I liked the
"photo" of him with the bull.
http://b.fssta.com/uploads/2017/04/10-8.vadapt.767.high.0.jpg
The BBC may have goofed when they reported he lost a few teeth.
I think they said that. I think I heard them say that. From
what I can gather, he didn't -- but he will need some kind of
dental work.
Then I was wondering how can one player get his elbow that high,
high enough to strike another player in the face? I kept trying
to visualize how it could have happened. Then I saw a photo.
It turned out that both Messi and Marcelo were airborne when
it happened.

I saw the pictured hit on Messi in real time. It came by the
elbow of Marcelo (Brazilian national teammate of Neymar
[suspended this match for his sarcastic applauding of a ref]),
probably the best left-back in soccer worldwide currently and a
player I would have on Barca's back-line in an instant if I got
what I wished for. The thing is, in spite of Sergio Ramos and
Marcelo apologizing to Messi as he lay prone spitting out blood,
I have my doubts as to its innocence. Ramos, incidentally, was
later red-carded in the match for a flying two-footed leap at a
Messi busy-ball that one commentator said looked like a
leg-breaker. A totally unnecessary challenge from the Madrid
player which looked suspiciously like if you can't stop Messi on
the ball in the match, then take him out of the game. The
challenge came midfield. Ramos is a back-line defender. What's
he taking a tackling run at Messi up there for?
Here is Fabio Capello, a former manager of Real Madrid
(2006-2007) making this claim:
The Italian stated: "A straight red for Ramos was the correct
decision. Just look at the lunge on Messi, it's criminal. He
furthered: "Each time there is a Madrid-Bara duel at the
Santiago Bernabu, certain Madrid players go out with the
intention of injuring Messi".

http://en.as.com/en/2017/04/24/football/1493064338_366966.html
I don't know what was in Ramos' mind at the time. He said later
that he was not intending to hurt Messi but admitted that he
ought to have been given a yellow instead of getting booted out
of the game and a one match suspension added. And Ramos is such
a gifted player. A true centre-back capable of winning a game
with the stretch of his neck. Amazing that this should have
happened at all.

Motive is always hard to determine. How important should
motive be to a ref? Perhaps they should stress the results of
actions a little more and the motives a little less?
Can you imagine how people would drive if you had no rules about
except to try to drive safely. You tell people the law is not
to drive faster than is safe without any other guideline. You
get the traffic cop to guess if someone genuinely thought the
speed was safe. " Oh, you ran that red light and thought you
could get through without causing an accident -- okay, if you
thought that, no ticket for you."
One thing seems clear: Even if these players don't have the
active intention of harming Messi, their motive to play without
injuring him is not very strong.

Sometimes a ref can discern motive in a revenge scenario where a
player has gone after another after being hurt or humiliated by
them. Then it becomes a bigger, league issue. In Ramos' case,
the ref had made the correct call since Ramos was seen leaving
his feet for the tackle on Messi.
Casemiro, on the other hand, clearly twice interfered with Messi
on the ball but received only a single yellow. He had been
turned inside out by Messi on the ball earlier in the middle of
the pitch. Leo's not a show-boater. He could have gone for the
"sombrero" on Casemiro, a move where the ball is hitched up into
the air over an opponent's head. In any case, Casemiro (the
engine of Madrid's midfield) was carded for interfering with
Messi in the first instance and Messi can be clearly seen waving
a card-hand at the ref asking for the card against Casemiro in
the second. Refs ought to consider whether a player is being
hounded I believe.

True. No special care taken for sure. Accidents apparently
happen.
