^^^ The music again reminds me, Heartsong, of my military
years. Marvin Gaye's song "Mercy Mercy Me" brings back my basic
training memories in the Air Force in 1971 and the walks I did
during during the autumn winds to the Base Lakes at FE Warren
AFB in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
I was struck by the idea of mercy which is thematic of the song.
That theme would come time mind during the days I served while
in the medical corps. I would meet many people who had issues
that needed to be resolved, not all of them medical. And there
was the haunting, daunting nature of the Cold War. We could not
get away from it. Thanks for sharing these songs . . .
Here is another song from that time:

^^^The music of this thread, Heartsong, reminds me of my
military days. The past, with all of its unutterable sorrows
and joys, slips away however hard we try to hold onto it as we
change in the continual process of becoming as we move through
time. As I've listened to the music, I tend to think the
following song was my favorite song during my military days.

Love, if it is true love, is never lost in distance and time.
It stubbornly remains and one has to learn to live with it. One
has to realize that love is part of the becoming of who we are
at bottom as we move through time. It's an odd thing, at times,
to think about: that lost love is never lost. It is found in
how it works itself out in the life and loves of others apart
from oneself and in the distance with others. But, of course,
I'm just rambling. Love is eternal. :)

This song makes me think about how when I was a child, my view
of God and feelings for him and about him was that he was a
loving and compassionate God but more than that he is a loving
heavenly Father. But then growing up in different churches over
so many years, I was taught that God was an angry, vengeful, and
even sadistic God who took pleasure in torturing people in
hellfire for eternity. So then my view of God changed and I
became fearful of him and could no longer see the love in him.
....Then one day I understood that God had been misrepresented
by those churches and really they built a wall between people
and God. And God let me know like he did when I was a child that
he is love and that he is a loving heavenly Father.

It seems Green had his own problems early on with religion.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Green
Green had a Jewish heritage[8] and was raised in Christian
Science.[citation needed] He grew up reading the New Testament
and called the mixture of being Jewish and learning about Jesus
"an odd combination" that left him open minded but deeply
unsatisfied. He began doing drugs and became interested in
eastern mysticism and "free love." After experiencing what Green
described as a "bad trip," he abandoned drug use and became
interested in philosophy and theology. "When Green was 19 he met
a fellow seeker/musician named Melody. They were inseparable and
got married a year later now he had a partner as his spiritual
and musical quest continued."[8] Green later stated, however,
that in the midst of his skepticism, he had, "been lost in a
fantasy, till [God's] love broke through."[9] and he renounced
Christian Science and became a Jewish believer in Jesus the
Messiah. A week later, Green's wife Melody, whom he had married
in 1973 and was also Jewish, became a Jewish believer in Jesus.
It was during this time that the newlyweds became involved with
the Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Southern California.

Thank you for posting this, Heartsong. I enjoyed it.
It could be said those who need God to punish people in Hell
eternally are those who have the need to have what has been done
to them be punished through God's vengeance. For these people,
it is the cry for justice in a world that lacks justice. I am
sure that punishment will happen and there shall be an
accounting for all evil deeds.
I think the primary issue is whether or not Hell is eternal. I
suppose that it would be for those who have finally rejected
God, especially those who've been greatly evil in human history
such as Hitler, Stalin, Genghis Khan, who have tortured and
caused the deaths of millions. I suppose these and their
followers shall populate Hell. I suspect that for all others
there shall be an apokatastasis, a renewal that will permit them
to leave the abyss and not enter Hell. They may remain outside
of the Heavenly Jerusalem but they may enjoy a natural
happiness. This is my reading of the Book of Revelation,
especially the final chapters where one can see that people out
of the abyss are not allowed into the Heavenly Jerusalem but
have not been thrown into the lake of fire such as Hell and
Death was. I am hopeful that the mass torture of many shall be
avoided in the after life. I consider torture by a capricious
God to be unbiblical. Such are my thoughts . . .

I would think and hope that God would be more merciful and
humane than to use the same tactics that evil people have used
on others and took pleasure in seeing people suffer. I believe
that God in his wisdom and mercy has more humane ways of
punishment and justice. After all his thoughts and ways are
higher, not the same.

When I was 15 years old and in a foster home, there was a little
girl who was brought there as well. She was seven years old. I
immediately noticed that her hands were disfigured and I was
told that her mother had burned her hands on the stove.
Every night she had nightmares and would scream and cry in agony
clutching her hands together. I would try to comfort and calm
her. She just cried and cried and eventually went to sleep.
That really had an impact on me and it was a turning point for
me as I thought what a monster her mother was and I thought,
isn't that similar to what I had been taught about God and his
torturing people in hellfire for eternity.
Long story short, I learned an important lesson from that
experience. And it was one that I needed to learn because that
wall that separated me from God came crashing down.
