For me, good music brings back good memories, or if the time in |

question was dark, that it provided some light. |

I'm struck by the time, some forty years ago, how indestructible |

I felt about myself. At the time, I was still dominated by |

Ralph Waldo Emerson's idea of the Oversoul. I had felt the |
|
divine within and was very determined never to let it go. |
|
The words of these songs may mean one thing, but they also mean |
|
other things in the hallways of our past . . . |

The concept of Higher Love reminds me of the belief I had (and |
|
still have) of the idea of the Higher Law, which the New England |
|
Transcendentalists spoke quite a bit about: that love and moral |
|
law also exists on a higher plan, respectively Higher Love and |
|
Higher Law, where a mundane human action touches the divine. In |
|
this higher realm, God enters into the moral action and the |
|
action of love and ennobles it with his love and his |
|
righteousness. In this a transformation occurs: what is |
|
seemingly human action becomes divine action, and the humans in |
|
question participate in a higher reality than what they had |
|
hitherto experienced. |
|
But the human and mundane cannot remain at that higher realm and |
|
must descend back into the ordinary and so that "Heaven Can't |
|
Take It", which I understand may be the point of the meaning of |
|
the title of this thread. We cannot love purely; we cannot will |
|
one thing, in this case authentic love, and so we are open to |
|
the tragedy of failed love, of failed righteousness . . . |
