Say DH... those are some NICE winter pics of the fields there...
love that shot of the P-40's. BTW... I've lost it now, but I
did have a shot of experimental P-40's in Alaska with skies
mounted for the gear instead of wheels... Saw one too (also long
ago) of a similar one in Russia. Wow, can't imagine
flying/landing a REAL P-40 with skies!
Oh.. I saw in that FIRST picture there those gobs of tents...
they look near EXACTLY like the 'bigger' tents in the game.
They've really got them stacked in there. Bet it was cold as
hell trying to sleep in those bad boy tents there during the
winter. >:(
I've never (of course) flown combat planes in cold (or any other
kind) weather, BUT I have worked outside on the farm of my
childhood and later in some construction outside in near or
below zero temps... it SUCKED. Nothing mechanical seems to work
right in 'below' freezing temperatures. Our old tractor for
instance would be great in the Spring, Summer, Fall...but come
Winter, it stayed messed-up all the time and working on it,
especially trying to do so with gloves on (or off), was hell.
Many times my hands would literally 'stick' to the metal because
I couldn't get to a nut or bolt or some part with my gloves on
so would have to pull them off and try. And sometimes the
wrench would 'stick' to the part you were trying to use it
on...hahaha. Oil would be thick...sometimes in really low
temps, TOO thick, and batteries died like sprayed flies... fine
one second and dead as hell the next. I don't envy those guys
trying to fly and keep flying those finicky war planes and
military equipment in those conditions...especially back then.

Ignore watermark... nice pic of the field guys loading the guns
and maintaining the craft... looks a bit TOO nice. Is this
possibly staged for propaganda purposes?

Again ignore the watermarks... this is a CREEPY picture of a
landing strip (maybe in Russian Front somewhere?) That solitary
Henschel Hs 126- Reconnaissance plane sitting there by those
huts (?) and ALL of that open expanse behind it... whoa! Seems
like it's at the end of the Earth! :o

NOTE: A VERY fine description and tons of information from the
link below about that particular airfield...made for the RAF but
expected to be given to the Yanks, which it was. GREAT site
there.

June 1942 Crete airfield
Operation Albumen was the name given to British Commando raids
in June 1942 on German airfields in the Axis-occupied Greek
island of Crete, to prevent them from being used.
