Upon reflection, I think the rules should be whatever the mods
want to enforce since they'll be the ones doing the work.

Well... put it this way... we're not proposing anything we're
not willing to enforce.
But also - my perspective as the starter/admin of the forum is
that I am not the owner here, I am the coordinator, and part of
my job is to listen for what the community wants and work to
accommodate that within what a volunteer mod crew can do.

I certainly agree that people who have left of their own accord
should be able to come back, even with a different ID, without
being hassled.
I also agree that second chances should be allowed for people
who have posted things that needed intervention by the
moderators, again a different ID would be OK. Individuals who
persist in being offensive with successive IDs can be dealt with
by the moderators in whatever manner they see fit.
I have no knowledge of sock puppets being used here -- I think
the audience is too small to make anyone think they are a
worthwhile use of energy, but what do I know.
I am not sure there is very much difference between publicly
asking someone if they were previously X poster and making a
flat statement that they are indeed X. Polite tone or not, it
has the same effect.

In regards that last point, that one may ask someone if they are
a particular poster from before, that really shouldn't be public
at all. If X is here because they are trying again, or whatever,
asking out in public if they were W before puts them in a bit of
a bind. Sure, they can ignore the question, but then there are
some who would continue to hammer away at it. If X was W before,
they are X now for a reason. It doesn't matter what the reason
is.
I wish more people would just block the folks they are so riled
by. Someone gets up my nose and I give myself a little break
from them. I don't need to make an announcement to the entire
board that I think X was W and as W they were horrible and thus
should be drawn and quartered and their heads put on a pike as a
warning to others.

Ah. I was thinking more along the lines of asking because they
like that poster and would be happy to see them. While
recognizing the other might happen. Which is all of the the
reason for saying you get ONE ask. But I take your point that
the value of the first may be outweighed by the damage of the
second.
Im gonna ponder about that for a bit.

FWIW I would love to see LongTall on here again, no matter the
moniker.
This isn't black and white. If you've been around a while, you
know which people are consistently obnoxious, and their "style"
for lack of a better word is easy to spot. Knowing these styles
means a person has been on here and on Hax quite a while I
imagine.
