"Anne-Marie's an elephant, playing in the band" instead of
"Tambourines and elephants are playin' in the band" on "Lookin
Out My Back Door" by Creedence Clearwater Revival. I think my
husband used to hear "Bain-maries and elephants..."
I'm going to enjoy this thread!
I heard it as "Memories and elephants".
I thought it was Memory of an Elephant.
It could well be - I looked it up on one of those lyrics
websites, and I'm not convinced they always get it right! ;D
oh good point! But I meant thats how I sang it. And one
day I thought, the memory of an elephant is probably not playing
in the band.

Sorry, I misread you! :-[
Instead of memory-of-an-elephant playing-in-the-band, it could
be memory of an-elephant-playing-in-the-band? If I've managed
to convey what I'm trying to say, that makes at least as much
sense as any other interpretation.
I think I'll have to YouTube binge on CCR now. ;D
The name supposedly comes from the Scottish ballad Sir
Patrick Spens. The line in question was They killed Sir
Patrick Spens and laid him on the green.
Just to nitpick: no, it doesn't, because the ballad of Sir
Patrick Spens contains no such line. (His ship sank, and his
ballad ends 'Half owre, half owre to Aberdour / Tis forty
fathoms deep, / And there lies gude Sir Patrick Spens / With the
Scots lords at his feet.')
The ballad you're thinking of is 'The Bonny Earl o' Moray',
which begins:
'Ye Hielands and ye Lowlands,
O where hae ye been?
They have slain the Earl o' Moray
And laid him on the green.'

Im not talking bout the linens instead of Im not talking
bout moving in from England Dan Id really like to see you
tonight
I always thought it was talking bout the linens too, until a
friend told me I was singing it wrong. She then told me it was
talking bout religion, so I started singing it that way!
I actually always thought it was Im not talking bout the
limit when I was little.
I thought it was "I'm not talking about millennia" thinking we
don't have to be together for a long time.
Good to finally know the real words! ;D
I've had that song wrong for 40 years :D.
And, of course, CCR's "You Don't Need A Pinhead, Just To Hang
Around"

This one's pretty specific - I'm probably the only person who
hears this.
Scar Tissue by The Red Hot Chili Peppers has the line, "With the
birds I'll share this lonely viewin'" I invariably hear this as,
"With the Burgess Shale is a lonely view".
Note: the Burgess Shale is a large fossil deposit from about 500
million years ago in British Colombia. It has one of the best
records of the "Cambrian Explosion" in the diversity of marine
animals.

Credence Clearwater Revival lyrics often seem to lend themselves
to mondergreens. I dont know how many people thought Theres
a Bad Moon on the Rise was Theres a Bathroom on the Right.
Perhaps its because the song was heard in bars or pubs fairly
late on a Friday or Saturday evening.
Down on the Corner lyrics could almost warrant a thread of
their own.
I'm not sure what became of him but Rob Carlson was a local who
got his start in musical parody by writing and singing them for
a radio station in the area. His Number One Hit was, in fact,
"There's a Bathroom on the Right" and it sounds pretty much like
what you would expect. (Hysterically funny.) "You feel your
bladder overflowin, you know it's time for you to go..." His
ability to sound like the people he was parodying was amazing.
Most of his other songs weren't based on mondogreens. He just
chose the best music to fit the topic. One of his best was Bob
Dylan's "Let's Get Stoned" with lyrics about then DC Mayor
Barry whose addictions were oh so well known.

Whisper the shed is a lonely view.
Not sure what I thought this meant.

"I don't want to come to your Bar Mitzvah."
Actual lyrics: "I don't want to come back down from this cloud."
from "This Cloud", by Bush, circa early 90's.
