New Bitreich Brain R.I.P. channel.

Due to public request, Bitreich IRC now has a new concept channel:

       #bitreich-brainrip

What is "Brain R.I.P."?

It evolved from bleak's project: brain.rip

It is topics that are supposed to make your brain rest in peace, like:

       * politics
       * awkward ideas
       * offensive stuff
       * sarcasm only you understand
       * locally-dependend topics
       * extremist stuff
       * ...

Flooding and technical insufficiencies will be stopped by moderators.

Why is such a topic needed?

The hacker culture evolved from the idea of creating a global culture
where people with this specific mindset contact eachother and strive for
further completeness.

Since new generations of people will arise, they will bring the need for
what they learned from the non-Internet world.

The methods of the non-Internet world have slowly moved on the Internet
too. You could live an online life without ever meeting the old hackerdom
and the ideas of online freedom / culture.

What is the plan for the channel?

The users will decide.

Have fun!

Sincerely yours,

20h

Bitreich /bin/true|false service now online.

In a lengthy scrum meeting this morning on #bitreich-en, the community
decided on a new service for bitreich.org:

       $ printf "/bin/true\r\n" | nc bitreich.org 70
       True
       $ printf "/bin/false\r\n" | nc bitreich.org 70
       3\tFalse\tFalse\t...

You can easily integrate this into your local /bin/true and /bin/false
for your binless environment. Further services will be added as suggested.

If there is an overuse, there will be implemented as suggested by Athas:

       10:51:16 Athas | Perhaps with a 1sec delay that can be removed if
                        you pay for a subscription.

Have fun!

Yesterday we had a global session between three continents (Australia,
Europe, North America) at Romanov's Vengeance modifiction for Open RA 2
Yuri's Revenge. This is the extension of the Command and Conquer field
layout to pseudo-3D isometric fights.

It was much fun! Especially the new possibilities of commander points,
special abilities for troops and the different play styles of psychic
powers vs. mass assault vs. technology give it a perfect taste.

10/10 from me.

GangBAN 2024-04-06 report.

Yesterday we had a nice day of GangBAN gaming. People from three
continents and different timezones joined in.

The games we played were:

OpenRA: In coordinated attacks against multiple AI players we developed
new attack strategies using rangers and light tanks. Hopefully this
tactics can be developed further with more rounds. :-)

ET:Legacy: Plasmoduck recommended to play ET:Legacy, a RPG game of Axis
vs. Allies in different mission styles. The games runs on low-end
computers, is fully open source, assets are downloaded automatically, no
registration is required. A perfect bitreich game. The servers are
populated and it is fun to have coordinated attacks and defences in for
example storming a French fortress.

Additionally, ET:Legacy supports dedicated mode, so Bitreich.org now can
hosts its own ET:Legacy server.

Thanks to everyone joining in! See you at the next GangBAN!

BITREICH STRUCT founded!

Programmingmen of all countries, struct-urize!
You have nothing to lose but your opt-ins.
You have a world to win.

A STRUCT is haunting the Internet -- the struct of the C programming
language. All the powers of the corporate Internet have entered into a
holy alliance to exorcise this spectre; Google and Mozilla, Microsoft and
Facebook, Linux kernel contributors and Software bloaters.

Where is the party in opposition that has not been decried as
memory-unsafe by its opponents in power? Where the Opposition that has
not hurled back the branding reproach of C programming, against the more
corporate opposition parties, as well as against the reactionary
adversaries?

Two things result from this fact.

I. C programming is already acknowledged by all Internet Powers to be
itself a Power.

II. It is high time that C programmers should openly, in the face of the
whole world, publish their views, their aims, their tendencies, and meet
this nursery tale of the struct of the C programming language with a
Manifesto of the party itself.

To this end, C programmers of various nationalities have assembled on

Sacc(1) to Become Official Gopherspace Client in Windows

Microsoft Announces Revolutionary Partnership: Bitreich Sacc(1) Gopher Client
to Become Official Gopherspace Client in Windows

In a shocking move that has sent waves through the tech world, Microsoft
has announced a groundbreaking partnership with the underground tech
collective Bitreich. In a move that many are calling unexpected yet
revolutionary, Microsoft will be adopting Bitreich's obscure but beloved
Sacc(1) Gopher Client as the official gopherspace client in Windows
operating systems.

Gopher enthusiasts around the world were left stunned by the
announcement, as Microsoft's embrace of Bitreich's minimalist gopher
client represents a significant departure from its traditional business
practices. Gopherspace, a relic of the early internet, has seen a
resurgence in recent years among tech purists who appreciate its
simplicity and lack of corporate influence.

"We believe that embracing technologies like Gopher is crucial to our
mission of empowering every person and organization on the planet to
achieve more," said Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, in a press release.
"Bitreich's Sacc(1) Gopher Client embodies the spirit of innovation and
community-driven development that we strive to foster at Microsoft."

Bitreich, known for their avant-garde approach to software development
and disdain for mainstream technology trends, expressed cautious optimism
about the partnership.

"We never imagined that our humble Gopher Client would find a home in one
of the world's largest tech companies," said a spokesperson for Bitreich,
speaking under condition of anonymity. "But we're excited to see where
this collaboration takes us. Who knows, maybe one day we'll see Microsoft
adopting our other projects, like the infamous ed(1) text editor."

Reaction from the tech community has been mixed, with some praising
Microsoft for embracing alternative technologies, while others remain
skeptical of the company's motives.

"It's definitely unexpected," said tech analyst Sarah Johnson. "But
Microsoft has been making some surprising moves lately, so who knows?
Maybe this is just the beginning of a new era of collaboration between
corporate giants and the underground tech scene."

As for users, many are eagerly awaiting the next Windows update, which is
rumored to include the Sacc(1) Gopher Client as a built-in feature.
Whether this partnership will lead to a resurgence of interest in
gopherspace remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: April 1st,
2024, will go down in history as a day of unexpected tech announcements.

Luke, I'm your Farter.

Today we had a new kind of GangBAN style. First we played OpenRA and
defeated the hard AIs. Then we proceeded to trying out multiplayer indie
games on itch.io.

This involved:
* Being the baddie on the roads.
* Being a tomato can.
* Shooting voxel enviroments and changing them.
* Racing games with all kind of vehicles.
* One game where you were running around with a monster that uses farting
for turbo mode to throw off your enemy off a platform.
* And much more.

So in the end the question remains: Who is your Farter?

Thanks for everyone joining in. We need to repeat this. There are much
more games to go on itch.io.

Have fun!

For today's GangBAN a new bitreich project was created; the bitreich
gaming ling:

       $ git clone git://bitreich.org/bitreich-gaming-link
       $ cd bitreich-gaming-link
       $ ./udp-ssh-reverse-tunnel [email protected] $localport \
               $remoteport

What can this be used for?

If we want to play for example 0ad, there is only an option of local UDP
hosting. This required redirecting UDP connections to the local hosting
on a computer running the 0ad server session. We can easily create this
now.

Of course the scripts can be reused with every ssh server out there.

Have fun!

Sincerely yours,

Additional games for today's GangBAN

For today's GangBAN some extra games could be played:

https://bearlikelion.itch.io/mpdc
A simple 2d online dungeon fighting game.

https://jevansmassive.itch.io/fingerguns
Fingergun RPG fighter game, local and in web browser.

Sadly some games did not fit the needs for massive multiplayer. But they
are nice to look at:

https://noiros.itch.io/object-wars
Object Wars, a RPG fighter game in an average home. Requires
registration.

https://gabiber.itch.io/k-vs-m
Katchup vs. Mustard. Only allows local 1vs1.

https://lmirman.itch.io/day-at-the-races
Korky race simulation game. Sadly has control issues here.

https://laundrybear.itch.io/trackoons
Racoon racing game. Controls broken.

https://geraldcoolsealion.itch.io/tomato-soup-splashdown
Tomato Soup splash down fighting game. Only local multiplayer.

https://www.ya2.it/pages/yorg.html
Nice matchbox racing game. But crashes.

See you at the GangBAN!

Sincerely,

FOSDEM client now available.

FOSDEM has changed; it has become boring, corporate and too crowded. We
at Bitreich went off for you to summarize the FOSDEM experience in a
simple collection of scripts:

       git://bitreich.org/fosdem-client

Nothing else is needed to get you the feeling of FOSDEM, just without
crowds, bumping into people, being annoyed why you went there, sitting on
the cold ground with your laptop watching the streams. And less costs.

And remember: Corporate overcrowding kills.

Are there alternatives? Of course. See Bitreichcon, where you can follow
using just a dial-up modem. If you come to the physical event, we work
together on projects and have fun in small groups of people.

Have fun!

2024 New Year's Eve Bitreich Bitmasquerade a success!

Our first annual New Year's Eve Bitmasquerade was a small success!

Three people joined #bitreich-en behind their bitmasks. Convivialities
and guessing ensued in clever attempts to reveal who lurked under
their mysterious mask!

       <_01001> _10011: what is ur favorite irc client
       <_1010110> _01001: ircc
       <_1010110> (hard clue)

       <_01001> are u currently using ur favorite client
       <_1010110> _01001: nope
       <_10011> _01001: i have no favourite. i use the one i have installed here

       <_01001> _1010110: r u a doctor
       <_1010110> yes a sex doctor
       <_1010110> gitte pushing it into my patients

       <_1010110> _10011: what have you prepared for dinner
       <_10011> _1010110: nothing
       <_1010110> _10011: you are starving on the street as it seems
       <_1010110> _10011: you are jrmu in San Francisco

       <_01001> _10011: what r ur party plans
       <_10011> _01001: hanging out with strange people on irc

Eventually the characters behind the bitmasks were revealed!

       <_01001> suspect _1010110 is 20h
       <_1010110> :o
       <_1010110> gave too many hints
       <_1010110> _01001: you found me! :D

       <@__20h__> _01001, so you are pazz0 by penis^Wnick length?
       <_01001> no my penis is much bigger
       <_01001> than pazz0s
       <@__20h__> how big?
       <_01001> let me say
       <_01001> i dont need a scarf
       <_01001> in winter
       <@__20h__> So no ROYGBYTE.
       <@__20h__> It is colder in Canada.
       <_01001> yeah its not so cold here
       <_01001> too muc hwater
       <@__20h__> Athas!
       <@__20h__> :D
       <_01001> Darn.

Thanks to everyone who came out to play! We will have more
Bitmasquerades in the future with even better identity hiding
bitmasks. Look forward to letting loose behind the veil of
binary anonymity!

Obfuscatedly,

present it all. Please see here the slides and the preliminary audio dump
of the end year meeting:

The last part of the whole meeting was a community rememberance of the
UNIX philosophy. Recently the bitreich-documents received two
interpretations of the UNIX philosophy principles. This is one way to
say, that there are many interpretations of them, but one direction to
go:

join from 11am CET on, when our newyeard will present you with greeting

I wish all of you a happy, healthy, glorious and successful year 2024!

Last day of 1st Bitreich PEBCAK

Today until 30 min before our end year meeting today, you can still use
annna to generate interesting emojis to maybe win

       The UNIX Philosophy
       by Mike Gancarz

There is an interesting description of the core values of Bitreich and
how to adhere to them.

Prompting on IRC with annna uses UNIX in the underground layers en masse,
like from the ii(1) IRC frontend, to the text parsing in shell scripts,
running simple abstractions to stable diffusion.

Here is the phlog article on fine-grained prompt tuning for your help:

       gopher://bitreich.org/0/usr/20h/phlog/2023-12-21T16-02-59-269458.md

See you this evening to crowning the winners and for the end year
meeting!

Sincerely yours,

20h

# 2023-12-29 13:37:00.133769 UTC (+0000)

sfeed 2.0 was released.

sfeed is a tool to convert RSS or Atom feeds from XML to a TAB-separated file.

It can be found at:
* git://git.codemadness.org/sfeed
* gopher://codemadness.org/1/git/sfeed
* https://codemadness.org/releases/sfeed/
* gopher://codemadness.org/1/releases/sfeed/

sfeed has the following changes compared to 1.9:

Features:
* sfeed_update: use xargs -P for improved job handling when updating feeds in
parallel.
* sfeed_update: update default maxjobs from 8 to 16.

Fixes:
* sfeed_json: fix name of "url" field for attachments.
* sfeed_opml_export and sfeed_update: allow only regular files.
* sfeed_update: improve compatibility with zsh as a non-interactive shell,
because some variables likes like $path and $status are reserved.
* sfeed_update:
when the feeds() function is not defined then exit with status code 1 (this
was incorrectly status code 0).
* sfeed_update: improvements in the cleanup of temporary files for edge-cases.

Code improvements:
* sfeed_curses/sfeed_gopher: mark functions as static.
* sfeed_gopher: fix a clang-analyzer warning (no difference in behaviour).
* sfeed_update: in the order() function suppress output to stderr, like merge()
already does.
* Some small documentation improvements.

There was some work in adding tests for sfeed_update. This makes testing for
regressions on many platforms faster to spot.

Thanks for all feedback and patches,

:)

Thanks,
Gopherholistic coach,
Hiltjo

Bitreich Emojis now have the original prompt stored.

For making international meme exchange and production more equal by
seizing the memes of production, bitreich has started to keep the prompts
available for you, which emojis were produced from. This is using the
original memecache format of having some $meme.orig file, where you
either find the URI or the prompt of how the meme was produced /
included.

See from our new upcoming newyeard feature:

5 years of Memes in Annna!

Exactly on 2018-12-25 annna became the ability to do memes:

       gopher://bitreich.org/1/scm/annna/commit/ccb82920d48d6c3ecc315c143c7cd16ff29c7a8d.gph

The first memes were: #magic, #10, #jew and #doc.

See how far we have gone:

       gophers://bitreich.org/1/meme/count

Over 17551 memes are now in the static memecache.

But new stuff is out there and needs to be counted:

       1220 memes have been filtered and altered by users.

And today we reached

       600 generated emoji memes via stable diffusion.

All of this adds to

       19371 memes

Thanks to everyone who contributed with regular meme additions! All
people who tried out stuff.

More technology is still in our meme pipeline and to be done during the
bitreichcons. Stay tuned! :)

I want to remind you of our 1st PEBCAK competition:

       gophers://bitreich.org/0/usr/20h/phlog/2023-12-17T17-37-36-685963.md

On 2023-12-30, right before the End Year Meeting of Bitreich, the jury

The winner gets a book about the UNIX philosophy. A very interesting

Bitreich Nerd Training Programme announced.

Obesity is hitting the nerd population hard. To counter this, Bitreich
asked a doctor to design a training programme to burn some kcal:

       gophers://bitreich.org/1/bitflip

After you are done, maybe try some nerd relaxation:

       curl -s http://www.arztpraxis-lohmann.de | grep "NERD THERAPY"

Have fun!

Preparations for 30th Eternal September GangBAN Go Tournament

To prepare our go tournament tomorrow at 20:00 CEST, bitreich.org is now
running an instance of nngs, an old server software to allow us to host
go tournaments.

## Get an NNGS client.

Install cgoban1:
       https://cgoban1.sourceforge.net/

Most major distributions have the client as package games-board/cgoban.

There are other clients supporting nngs, but they all seem to be written
in Java. Who uses Java in 2023?

## Connect to Bitreich NNGS server.

       $ cgoban

1.) Click "Setup".
2.) Set "Server Name" to "Bitreich.org".
3.) Change "Machine Name" to "bitreich.org".
4.) Use for "Port Number" "9696" or "6969", depending on how naughty you
   are.
5.) Click "Bitreich.org" (button left upper corner) on the cgoban main
   menu.
6.) Choose whatever "Username" you like, "Password" empty.

## Games Coordination

* You can see running games by clicking "Games".
* "Players" shows you all online players, with the possibility to start a
game.
* In the center "X", "O" and "!" will give the server your status on how
eager you are for a game, so other players see it.

## Tournament

Everyone can already go online and play. Since go games can be really
long and most people wanting to join in are beginners, it will be much
fun with beginner errors and rankings.

The person with the highest rank on Friday evening will be the winner of
the GangBAN, so everyone in all timezones can play against eachother with
local friends etc.

The fun is in trying out Go. :-)

Have fun!

Sincerely yours,

20h
Chief Gaming Officer (CGO)

3rd 30yr Eternal September GangBAN results.

Thanks for everyone participating in yesterday's supertuxkart experiment.
We finally got all server parameters to work.

First there were competitions in the football style game. Here it was fun
to fight with the difference between ice hockey and the football/soccer
mode.

In the last man standing mode we realized, more people are needed for a
big fun game.

But finally we were able to get the AI bots running. So we fought bravely
in GP races against 12 bots and won!

Next week will be the final Eternal September GangBAN. There is the
proposal to play Go - a simple relaxing game that can be done over
commandline everywhere.

See you next week!

Results of 1st 30yrs Eternal September GangBAN

Yesterday, at the first 30yrs Eternal September GangBAN, we tried out a
new format of OpenRA: Ultra Extreme AI vs. Humans. During the just
extreme AI battle, we were able to defeat the AI. On second try, with
ultra extreme AI, we had to stop the game due to too many units on the
battlefield. In ultra extreme AI mode, the AI gets construction vehicles,
units for free, builds units instantly and slowly takes over the map.

Thanks for everyone joining in! It was so much, fun I had to retry a 1vs1
against extreme AI today in skirmish single player mode. It was much fun
again! :)

See you next week on Thursday for the second 30yrs Eternal September
GangBAN!

Bitreich IdleRPG: Holy Hand of RMS, Calamities, Online Statistics

Thanks to the fun people had with the Bitreich IdleRPG, two big new
features were added:

## Holy Hand of RMS

       21:42:00   @__20h__ | !hor ROYGBYTE
       21:42:00 annna | RMS had a bad day and moved ROYGBYTE 700

       21:43:46   @__20h__ | !hor ROYGBYTE
       21:43:46 annna | The holy hand of RMS moved ROYGBYTE 800 seconds
                             forward in idle time.

The event can also fire randomly.

## Calamaties

       21:42:27   @__20h__ | !calamity
       21:42:27 annna | adc found an exploit in the IdleRPG code! This
                             caused the idle time to change by -700 to 282590.

Those events can fire randomly and have a random idle time change.

By 40% chance, there can be random change of class, hardware, shield or
weapon too.

## Online Statistics

After long hard work at brcon2023 and on Sunday by over five people,
finally The Gopher Times Opus 7 is out:

This opus includes:

       * Donkey Meter
       * Most minimal gopher server and client architecture.

Brcon2023: All recordings are cut and online.

It took a while, but people had the raw recordings for the full
experience. Now the recordings are linked and cut online for download of
brcon2023:

Day 1 is not easy to listen to due to the microphone errors. The loudness
was a bit reduced for the rest of the days.

Have fun listening!

Bitreich IdleRPG is online.

Another goal of the post-brcon2023 hackathons has been reached: The
initial version of bitreich IdleRPG is running at

       ircs://irc.bitreich.org/#bitreich-idle

Please join in!

## How does it work?

You play by idling in the channel. If you do anything which is not idling
(part, join, text stuff), you get penalties on your idling counter. Every
five days for now you level up.

When you join, you are automatically assigned a hacker character, which
you will play.

There are some admins who can run commands without getting a penalty for
texting (but still all other penalties).

Examples:

       @__20h__ | !info adc
          annna | The hacker adc of the class windows_developer is using his
                  thinkpad_T_laptop hardware which is protected by
                  laughable_programming_style. adc's weapon is mouse. adc
                  has idled for 755 seconds and has reached level 0.

       @__20h__ | !info __20h__
          annna | The hacker __20h__ of the class logo_programmer is using his
                  pinebook hardware which is protected by snakeoil. __20h__'s
                  weapon is oscilloscope. __20h__ has idled for 480 seconds
                  and has reached level 0.

## Development

More things will come. This is the initial commit and the prototype.

Happy idling!

Sincerely yours,

20h

Meme-tools now on bitreich.

The ground work for the new meme-tools repository was done at brcon2023
hackathon:

       git://bitreich.org/meme-tools

The goal is to make the meme handling for the bitreich memecache
independent with separate tools, so people can easily import/export
memes, exchange them, in their own personal memecache.

Tools to make this possible are welcome in this repository. For now just
some small tools and a beginning .memeblob.zip format has been
formulated.

Have fun!

Geomyidae v0.96  release.

After Brcon2023 people tested the new features in geomyidae and some
major bugs were fixed, so now the v0.96 release is ready. Please see the
talk at brcon2023 for the vast changelog and description of the new
(flexible and complex) features:

       gophers://bitreich.org/0/con/2023/rec/state-of-geomyidae.md

In addition:

       * TLS was completely fixed. It now works on OpenBSD.
               * Thanks Evil_Bob and adc for debugging this!
       * Connection and serving of files is now vastly improved due to
         reverse DNS lookup not being default.
               * Thanks Evil_Bob for finding this!
               * We need to fix the DNS Internet.

And don't forget BOB! Don't drink and write programming languages!

Gemini2gopher proxy now at Bitreich.

As of the announcement of osnews.com to have a gemini capsule, this
content should be available via gopher too. So I dig into a simple
translation of gemini to gopher.

There is a now a proxy running at:

       gophers://bitreich.org/1/gemini?gemini://gemini.osnews.com

You can get the v0.1 release of the proxy at:

git://bitreich.org/gemini2gopher-proxy
gophers://bitreich.org/1/scm/gemini2gopher-proxy
gophers://bitreich.org/9/scm/gemini2gopher-proxy/tag/gemini2gopher-proxy-v0.1.tgz

Have fun! Please send in bugs you encounter. The goal was to display the
osnews.com gemini capsule.

Complex Networks at Bitreich

Today I read a nice book written by our bitreich member KatolaZ:

       Complex Networks - Principles, Methods and Applications

If you like network studies, it is the reference you need to read.

To appreciate his work, bitreich now hosts a gallery of complex networks:

       gophers://bitreich.org/1/complex-networks

Feel free to send in more complex network pictures!
