I've got an old PalmIII laying around, which I received already years ago
from a colleague, when he switched to an iPhone or some other thingy.
It's still a very decent piece of hardware and works well -- and this
clog entry was written with it on the go! *wohoo*
About 15 years ago, I had a Palm Treo, which I used for everything, even
as a mobile terminal with some ssh application. Unfortunately it broke
(mechanical failure from wear). I have a second one from my father,
but its battery is dead. Their keyboards were simply wonderful!
The PalmIII OTOH runs on two simple AAA batteries, and they're still
half full after one month of rare use. I'd so much prefer modern mobile
devices ran on similar simple sources than the expensive Lithium stuff,
and I'd be happy to daily exchange (recharcheable) batteries instead of
plugging in a charger every second day.
I'm typing this mostly with the "Graffiti" entry system (simplified
handwriting with the stylus, which I still seem to remember from the Palm
Pilot I had about 20 years ago) and partly on the on-screen keyboard,
which is faster but noisier -- not because of clicks (which I always have
off) but due to the stylus tapping. In addition, the keyboard occupies a
lot of screen area, which is inconvenient during editing. The touchscreen
being resistive requires a bit more force than capacitive screens,
but it still reacts very reliably. In all, it's really nice to work with.
