User nydel  posted recently  about a  hypothetical situation
and conversation between Will  Riker and Geordi La Forge[1].
Driving  down  the  road  with  my wife  the  other  day,  I
mentioned that I would love to  live in a world where people
did  things  because  they  loved them,  because  they  were
passionate about  them. I  mentioned the fictional  world of
Star Trek, where  people are on the  Enterprise because they
want to  be, because  that is their  passion and  study, and
that  there are  no wages,  no earnings,  no higher  pay for
being the captain vs. any other member of the crew.

She didn't  realize that it  was that  way in the  Star Trek
universe[2]. I had to explain it  to her. To me, it's one of
the defining aspects of their lives, as the inverse truth is
one of  the defining aspects of  our lives here on  earth in
2018.

Nydel had a  beautiful conclusion, which you  should read if
you have not  already. Essentially, it was  an expression of
hope that we might become  more like these fictional people,
caring more  about what  truth or  knowledge we  might bring
into the universe (or bring into notice,) and less about our
own position, rank, or profit. I'd  love to see a world like
that.
