I don't know about everyone else, but I'm super excited to
see that auzymoto[1] has joined tomasino[2] in creating
their own gopher server. This can only be good for gopher.
Auzymoto noted in his post that there are benefits and
downsides to centralized, shared servers and resources. I
agree entirely, and I feel that both ought to exist in a
healthy and growing way in gopher as they do on http. If I
can manage to get my house sold and move completed, I plan
on doing likewise.
User jynx had a great bit of fun with finding a good
calendaring solution[3]. Google calendar is one of the last
things that I still use from the monolithic megacorp,
having abandoned everything else almost entirely. I use it
primarily for my wife's sake, but I would absolutely love
to have a different calendaring solution, especially if it
could be entirely decoupled from the advertising and privacy
killing entities. I want a calendar for my use, not for
others to create and use a profile on my life.
User jebug29 posted about people pestering him while he is
on vacation[4]. Basically, folks back home know that he does
"technology stuff" and other work, it sounds like, and they
figure that if he's around they get to enlist his service
when it's convenient for them. This is probably similar for
anyone with a particular skill set; people in their life
will ask for help, not realizing that combined, the requests
can be overwhelming. I've had the same experience, and
continue to have it on a regular basis.
My solution, after I move, is to not tell anyone that I work
with technology. I want to be a writer and I want to travel
more, so I'm just going to tell people in my next home that
"I'm a writer, and I travel a lot." That way, they won't be
asking me for free tech support, and they won't be shocked
if I'm gone a lot an unable to help with various life
chores. I feel like a bit of a jerk, but I've spent way too
much of my life without proper boundaries in this area.
Hopefully jebug29 will have better luck setting those
boundaries early.
