User slugmax gave a brief history of his experience with
prepping[1], in response to user melton's phlog posts on the
same subject[2]. These people are living, or have lived, a
dream that I have. I'm both envious and in awe at the same
time.
I visited a friend of mine a couple of days ago. He's got a
prepper mindset. I would say "like me" or "like us," but I
think there are some wildly different ideas in that realm of
thinking, so that most "preppers" aren't really that much
alike. Perhaps there are groups or schools of thought in it,
but I think a lot of people do it for different reasons, and
in different ways.
My friend, who I've mentioned before I think, is a
paraplegic. I don't say that to define him, and I'm hesitant
to describe him that way at all; I only mention it because I
feel like it's amazing that he does so much in spite of his
challenges. He purchased 2.5 acres with cash from the
sale of his home in Phoenix, and has been remodeling a
tiny house on the property for about the past year. He
is attempting to live mostly off-grid, with rainwater
collection, solar, chickens, etc. And everything is, by
necessity, wheelchair accessible.
His setup also fills me with awe and envy.
For me, "prepping" has been more of a hobby than a way of
life. I read a lot, and talk to a lot of people on the
subject. I'm even helping to organize a "preparedness fair"
in my area this summer. But I don't "live" that life. So
far, I haven't been able to. Or, I haven't chosen to, I'm
not sure exactly.
Since it is an area of interest for people, and because it
would please me to do so, I'm going to add a section to my
gopher hole where I can write about various equipment or
gizmos that I've tried in relation to being prepared.
Hopefully one day, I can write a bit about my exploits in
the area of living methods; and hopefully, the methods will
help me reach my own personal goals like I want them to.
