There's a shell provider out there named "Silence is
Defeat"[1]. They've been around, it appears, since 2000;
about 18 years. Even though their website looks entirely
dormant, you can still get an account there.

When you login to SD, as of 1/23/2018, you get a the
following welcome message:

If you try out 'who' you'll find a handful of users
regularly connected. If you look at the output of 'ps'
you'll see lots of instances of irssi and a few other
things of little interest.

I generally login and post some nonsense to an ongoing
html file that shows that I exist and am active. But I'd
like to do more to help the server. I'm not sure what that
would be.

Unfortunately, the only real thing going on that I can see
is irc. Many people seem to love irc, but I'm just not a
fan. It's a communication style that requires that you
either be present, or leave something running that makes
it appear as if you're present, in order to participate.
I like it even less than texting or phone calls.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I want to see public unix systems
stick around, especially the ones that have been surviving
for a while. I'm not sure exactly what that looks like,
beyond people simply using the services. SD needs some
life breathed into it... but even the admins don't
*appear* to be trying. It might just be that they're
done, and life has to go on with other things now, I
don't know. I guess nothing lasts forever.
