I can see the value in pubnix systems offering gopher as a
service for members. Those that aren't doing it are missing
out on an interesting community and marketing tool (I found
SDF through gopher, and I've heard the same from several
other people as well.)
But (there's always a but,) there are some things that I
would like to do that would be better suited for a personal
server. I used to run my own gopher server (2016?) and it
was an enjoyable experience. I'd like to run my own again
sometime soon, on a Pi (like so many out there). Here are
some of the things that I want to load onto it:
- Grays Anatomy, gopherized
- Webster's 1928 Dictionary, broken into text files/folders
- The PHP Manual (CC3), in text files/folders
- The z80 Instruction Set, in text/folders
And perhaps other useful or interesting content. I suppose
I could host these things at SDF, but for whatever reason,
I don't want to.
Of course, this will have to wait until after I move...
