I don't travel much currently, though I have done some
travel little earlier in life. I like to write, but the
idea of "travel writing" has always seemed a little funny
to me. Maybe I don't read enough of the stuff to get it.
Today, I was thinking it might be fun to do some quasi-
fictional travel writing. My idea was that I would pick
a place that I'd like to travel to, look up the Wikipedia
page, a few pictures, and maybe a couple other things,
then write as if I was in the place. To be honest, I was
thinking about a sort of parody approach, something fun.
While exploring the idea, I looked up a few locations in
the Alutian Arc. I don't know why, but that area of the
planet fascinates me. It doesn't really look like a fun
place to visit, but I still would love to visit there. I
ended up reading mostly about St. Paul Island, but I
think I could write fictional travel stuff about several
places in there.
Consequent to my reading about St. Paul Island, I found
out that Rudyard Kipling had written about the island,
from an animal's point of view of course, in a story
called "The White Seal." Since his works are public
domain, I went and read it. I'm never sorry when I read
his stuff.
Now I just have to find some time to fake-travel-write,
which seems absolutely ridiculous.
