Re: Melancholy season, sysdharma@sdf (zaibatsu), 09/27/2019
------------------------------------------------------------
sysdharma over at sdf briefly asked about a trend in sadness
and depression, and the possibility of a common cause[1].
I've also noticed it, in several adults that I know, in
myself, and even in my children recently. I have a few
possibly starts for theories:
1. Grand Solar Minimum: We're possibly entering a grand
solar minimum, and perhaps a historic one[2]. It's all just
conjecture, but I have a friend who believes that sun cycles
are tied to the economy, and other human and social areas.
They are clearly tied to earth and space weather. Is it
possible that they are also tied to depression?
2. Spiritual Causes: I'm of the viewpoint that humans are
spiritual creatures, impacted by spiritual things, things
unseen. I'm also of the viewpoint that we are governed by
spiritual laws and realities, and that when we fight against
those, we are affected, regardless of whether we believe in
such things or not. Perhaps the state of the individual, or
the state of the world, has an impact on depression?
Again, those are just starts on theories, ideas that are
rolling around in my head this morning after reading
sysdharma's post. In the realm of actual observation,
however, I will say that like sysdharma, I have seen
a notable number of cases in individuals that haven't
previously had depression.
How about you, gopherspace? Any uptick in your personal
circles, or in yourselves?

What to do about it?
When I was first married, my wife would be driven nuts
when, upon hearing her express frustrations, I would offer
possible solutions to her problems. She really only wanted
to talk about things, not resolve the. It took me quite a
few years to understand the reasoning there.
In that vein, I'd like to also ask gopherspace, what do you
personally do about depression in yourself and those around
you?
