Watering the Black Walnut Treets                              07/12/23
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's been a  dry summer, so far. Forecast keeps  calling for rain, but
the sky only delivers clouds, mostly.

Last summer was dry,  too. It was apparently hard on  one of the three
black walnut trees behind our house, which suffered from what is known
as Sudden Limb Drop. The large limb that tree shed, landed on a bit of
chain-link fence. It made a gnarled mess  of the fence (I cut out that
section, now we have  a nice entry to the back part  of our yard), but
did give a friend of mine some nice wood to put on the lathe, and left
plenty of smaller scraps for us to burn in the fire pit.

This year I decided to water the  trees. They have a large root system
(and an herbicidal  one at that!), but I've been  watering them at the
base mostly. Just let  the hose run for a while  on each one. Probably
need to  run it  in the yard  under the canopy,  where the  roots run.
That'd help the grass out too, I suppose.

There might  be some rain  tonight, but  I'm getting a  little worried
that the weather  folks just don't know what's they're  doing after so
many failures. If not, perhaps I'll water the yard tomorrow.
