Please Use Other Door 04/03/23
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is this only in the US? You show up at a business, with an expansive
entrance, and all of the doors have signs that say, "Please Use Other
Door --->" pointing you in the direction of the one door that is
unlocked.
When did this start happening? Was it like that when I was a kid?
These are old buildings, mostly. New buildings are designed around
single points of entrance/exit, emergency exits excluded. I was at a
Sam's Club the other day, a massive building with one point of
entrance, and one point of exit. A new building, no need for the
"Please Use Other Door" fiasco.
We were driving through a touristy town today, and stopped at a place
called "Ozarkland", a sort of "road trip destination". Three floors
(plus a basement! but the 3rd floor and basement were closed, so
really only two floors to visit) of tourist junk and overpriced candy.
Bought the kids some ice cream, and sat for a while (after perusing
the wares; my favorite was a little sound machine that spat out
Richard Simmons soundbites). As you have guessed, it had two front
doors, but one one operational one. The other had the ubiquitous
"Please Use Other Door --->" sign. It was an old building. The sign
was handmade.
My guess is that the modern explosion of shoplifting has led
businesses to desire more control over the flow of traffic. I wonder
if it works?
