So I found OpenRA [1] just in time for Christmas. I don't know why I am so late to the party given that every few years I grow nostalgic for the classic RTS games I grew up with in the 90's only to realise that their clunky control systems and interfaces are painful given what I am used to now.

OpenRA is an open source game engine where any of Dune 2000, Red Alert or Tiberian Dawn can be played with a modern interface/interactivity. Each of these games is in fact just a mod.

I've had loads of fun showing my kids the fun to be had with the RTS genre.

You can get stuck in editing units, structures, missions to your hearts content.

Best of all its simple to get started and seems to be fairly actively under development, I'm impressed by what they are doing.
