Re: Comments on Ditching Linux (slugmax)
----------------------------------------
I just wanted to piggyback on slugmax's comments on SparcIPX's
decision "to ditch Linux for good in favour of OpenBSD."
I've felt the siren call of OpenBSD on several occasions. I love
its purity, its credo, its man pages, and its release songs!
If I ever have to leave Linux like a rat from a sinking ship, I
know exactly which island i'll be swimming to.
(And like any desert island scenario, I know which text editor,
window manager, music, and books I'll be bringing with me.)
Slackware to the rescue
-----------------------
I'm really thankful Slackware Linux exists. I use it at work
(they let us run whatever we want on our desktops) and at home
on several machines.
Sure, it's got a bit of a learning curve and it could really use
an updated manual, but once you know it, you know it.
One of the first things to learn - and the thing I love about it
- is that Slackware doesn't do _anything_ until I ask it to.
Unlike the Windows systems in our house (heavy sigh), I know
that this computer is going to work exactly the same way today
as it did yesterday.
Fire and forget
---------------
I sit down and it's there, ready to do useful stuff.
The funny thing is that despite Slackware's "roll up your
shirt-sleeves and stick your hands in the guts" reputation, the
amount of system administration time I spend on these machines
is almost zero. Just performing periodic Firefox updates and
trying out new software packages now and then.
Anyway, if anyone is looking for a more BSD-like experience,
maybe try cutting Linux some Slack.
But...sorry, I don't think we have any songs (yet).
