It's the way the constitution wrote their authority.  They sited the constitution in their decision...

For 250 years its worked that way.  A district judge hears a case and makes a decision and if people don't like that decision it gets appealed.

The Justices said... You can only decide on THAT case because THAT'S all the authority you have, as per the constitution.

BTW, its not disingenuous when that is the wording from the Supreme Court.

BTW, Again... There is a video out where Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan was on camera apposing this District Court Judges, doing the same to Biden, then only later to support them because it was against Trump.

So... To use your analogy of cogs in the machinery...

1st Cog, District Judges
2nd Cog, Appellate Court
3rd Cog, Supreme Court

250 years of working fine.  It may take time but it works fine.
For 246 years Presidents have signed Executive Orders/Actions... Note the 4 years there was an Auto-Pen signing them without knowledge... And the 1-2-3 court system has worked fine.  for 250 years...
