My impression was that the myrrh was an extravagance. Brian's mom
desperately poor--she needed food or clothes or something essential, not
some foul-smelling stuff she couldn't even identify. She had just given
birth on her own, and a bunch of weirdos as she saw them were driving her
crazy. I was always thought she was sort of the straight man (or woman) in
the comedy.
