Yay, I think I finally got the BBS terminal settings to match my telnet client. Auto detect selected cp437 and I had to turn it off. My client says it supports cp437 and binary mode so IDK what the problem was. Novell DOS LAN Workplace TNVT220 from 1994. Using Desqview with Novell TCP/IP.

Hasn't crashed in the last few hours. Maybe I got lucky with the right QEMM Stealth parameters this time. 450k in a Desqview window should be enough for anybody.
