From a technical "Upgrade/Conversion" standpoint, it isn't 100% clear.
From a subscription standpoint, it doesn't matter, but as we always said,
the long time AUP subscibers will benefit the most. Obviously. Its common
sense. Long time AUP subscribers should have more benefits over those
who just subsribe "yesterday." We have a new pricing schedule though and
there is a breakdown over AUP discounts. AUP subscribers will get biggest
discounts of course. We don't want to get into it much until we got a
very clear picture of a release timeframe.
What the above does says is that we will be moving the top WINSERVER/2000
features over to WC5. It will be called WC6. The upgrade path will be
smoother with the initial requiring conversion of course.
This will allow us to move ahead gradually instead of trying to get a million
new features all finished and all documented. I have measured what the top
customer issues are with WINSERVER over the past 3 years and decided that
it is best to do this "graduaully", introducing the features we want over
time.
The first AUP WC6 upgrade will have:
- Long File Name support in the FILE LIBRARY first.
- Password Expiration Security Options
- Logon Hour Restriction Security Options.
- New CLOSE/VALIDATAION system operation mode.
And other small features that was easy to move over.
Then after this first WC6 introduction, we will add LFN to the Message
system. The reason for this is because I have not decided on the
final new mail format because I want to implement and test some
64 bit operations to handle large storage requirements.
The new WC6 has been in testing of about 3 months. It is pretty solid
with the new LFN. Some remaining WEB DHTML programming issues to work
with the new "New User" Closed/Validation features needs to be done.
