I see a steady decline in my interest in computer stuff. And I think
that's just fine.
Over the years, I have explored many areas. Not all, of course, that's
impossible. But I've learned a lot and uncovered many mysteries. A lot
of the software that I use today is software that I wrote myself. The
most important reason to write all that was to learn how stuff works.
And that has been a great success.
Of course, there is also a bit of frustration. At work, I'm forced to
deal with overly complex systems (like Kubernetes). That's a bit of a
downer and when I get home (or -- now during the pandemic -- when I shut
down my work laptop), I mostly just want to chill and relax.
But overall, frustration isn't the main thing. It feels more like I'm
"done".
I'm fully aware that you're never "done" learning, but here's the thing,
25 years ago, *everything was a mystery*. Almost every step I made was
"oh, wow, so that's how that works". Naturally, that phase is over now.
It's fine. Instead of learning yet another programming language or
exploring yet another operating system, I now do other stuff. For
example, that bass guitar thing. I discover lots of new music and I play
a lot. And every now and then, there's this magical moment: "Oh! I
learned something new! I can play that part now!" That's the best.
