"I'm dying."
DeCorticus is unable to raise its voice above a low whisper
as it relays the news to Law the Demon Stalker, Quack the Be-
fouler of Ponds, and Click Clack the Thinking Engine.
The noble and benevolent plant creature of indeterminate
origin has reigned over the Duchy of Plandra for so long that
even it can no longer recall exactly how or precisely when it
came to power.
DeCorticus's alien physiology requires a steady supply of
three things to support the phases and sub-phases of its complex
life cycle: Plenty of sunshine; lots of fresh water; and Star
Loam, a rare material of possibly extra-dimensional origin avail-
able only in minute quantities, and only in very specific, very
remote parts of the world.
Normally the duke's supply of Star Loam is delivered from
The Wall, a remote region far to the south. But an official (but
anonymous) missive has just been received explaining in no uncer-
tain terms that no more shall be delivered under any circum-
stances. No further explanation was given, and requests for more
information have gone unanswered. And now, DeCorticus explains,
it has mere number of days remaining.
"I am relying on you, my old friends, to obtain a supply of
Star Loam, lest Plandra suddenly find itself without a ruler."
