## Choosing things with so many good choices

I am so on the fence about which of maybe 4
platforms to home my own next **(self-hosted)**
instance on for Fediverse presence. It's really
hard to decide. Let's give this a go and you tell
me what you think, okay? * The truly social
choice - for well over a decade I like
#Friendica. Don't think I wanna #LAMP stack right
now though, and it does honestly require a bit of
care and feeding, which I don't mind, but most
instances I run across just don't seem performant
enough, although they federate freaking fast - so
fast, that sometimes, if, for example, I do a
post on a #Pleroma instance by the time I
immediately switch tabs and refresh to #Friendica
it's already there (that freakin' rocks!) - not
to mention the wonderful plethora of features and
add-ons, ease of customizing the UI, etc., But
with respect to the lackluster browser
response... I just dunno (same potential woes
with WordPress). I will say that when using
#Relatica on #Android it's, "fast as fuck boyyy,
fast as fuck!" (Audio from a video of a rooster
chasing a girl across her yard) I like it so much
I dedicated an entire article to **Relatica**. *
The new darling that everyone is ditching
mastotron for Huh? That's right, #Calckey. I
don't even know what to say. Extremely little
concern that it's just gonna work and have great
performance, with a lot of sensible (often
missing from other instances) features. Pages,
Groups, Antennas and things you wouldn't normally
think of because you don't see elsewhere, like...
Post multiple links? Guess what? You get multiple
previews. I could go on but there's always been
even in #Misskey, my impression is that the
threads are kind of messy looking in the UI (but
at least they are there!). That's really just
because I'm using other, more limited platforms a
lot and I'm not appreciating just getting behind
it to the point where I feel that I'm getting
ripped off by every other platform's #UI. Oh, and
*stupid simple updates*. **Daddy like!** * The
enduring easy choice among my favs I've always
been impressed with #Soapbox. I still feel
awkward deciding whether to say *Soapbox-FE*, or
spell out *Rebased/Soapbox*. For me, having moved
to #Pleroma back with version 1.0 (still with
OStatus back then), the **Pleroma-FE** was a
breath of fresh air, so it's just continued to
improve AFAIC. The only classical "social
networking" platform that supports federated
events - right now, only with #Mobilizon, which
incidentally is the only other Fediverse server
to have events at all, IIRC. And federated groups
are coming , while in there meantime, you can
enjoy almost seamless integration with people in
the #nostr world, thanks to #Mostr (developed by
the same good folks). **Performant, stable, and
featureful**, but most prominently, it provides a
really great #UX on desktop or mobile. * Unique
*and* familiar
#Mitra - it's picking up steam with respect to
#adoption and provides things no other #FOSS
#platform does, while remaining extremely
#familiar with what #Fedizens have come to feel
#most comfortable with. It has an actual *button*
#for **Home** right there in front of you at all
#times for a quick return, but it's not in the
#way at all. It's a total UI bonus.
Unlike others that appear super similar in the
familiar feeling interface, **it's an actual
publishing platform** that can also double
equally well for #shitposters. I wonder... Will
the integrated #monetization system be of any
value to shitposters? Some of them are actually
pretty funny! **One off donations** are "Easy
Peasy", as are **monthly subscriptions** to your
favorite blogsters and #journalists Sign-in with
the traditional username/password schema **OR**
your ETH Public key, no, this is an #ActivityPub
Fediverse platform - it incorporates and borrows
from some blockchain constructs but in no way
would I compare it to any #CryptoBruh speculation
#FOMO, the design decisions are about practical
authentication and *P2P* commerce with **"Privacy
Only"** #Monero **(XMR)**. If you aren't familiar
with the zealous, militant stance of the
**Monero** community you really should readup on
their philosophy, it's a nice fit for Fediverse.
Active development is important, and the priority
of design choices are carefully decided. **It's
written in Rust**, and *the dev welcomes
suggestions and contribs*. If there's a different
measure of its stability and potential, consider
that at least two other projects have built their
vision of what they want to see as a Fediverse
platform upon Mitra itself - people don't do that
unless your shit fricken' rocks. One of those
softforks is an #IMDb sort of thing that was
mentioned in the **Fediverse City** #Matrix Room.
* Honorable Mention
#Takahē - this is #Django. I've written an
#article doing a deep dive on **Takahē** too. I
#like it a lot and it performs quite nicely. The
##UX is good too, and takes moments to become
#familiar with. It has most of the features I
#would consider essential, but it's lacking a
#couple. I think the decision to, in some ways,
#not stray too far from mastopub is a decision to
#play it safe in seeking acceptance maybe,
#something devs eventually become bored with
#anyway, coz they like to make stuffs... and
#they're still busy being careful to make sure
#it's stable and compatible with everyone else's
#platforms in a prudent respect for users.
I won't go into the superduper features it has
here - folks can *go read my article if they want
the skinny on its* **extraordinary
capabilities**. * Other up and coming niche
players
#Snac, #Tapir, and #Bovine - new #SmallWeb
#emergences - depending on the UI, a user
#shouldn't (won't) actually feel or experience
#any difference between these and the others
#mentioned above with respect to interaction with
#everyone else in the world communicating on the
##Fediverse. After all, *it's the same dang
#protocol, right?*
In a way I'm really starting to expect the
**SmallWeb / Single User instance** platforms to
explode in adoption shortly. With *a little juju
black magic* from **Free Dynamic DNS Providers**
like https://freedns.afraid.org/ many from these
classes of Fediverse servers can potentially be
installed even on shit operating systems like
Windows by double clicking a setup icon on their
desktop (onboarding would at this time need to
include a separate DNS registration setup, but
the daemon's setup could be including an
integrated dyndns client). **Client IS server**
too - installed on your home desktop or carried
around on your laptop wherever you go. * On the
*not too distant* horizon I'm following progress
on, and excited about the possibilities that
#Bonfire will have to offer. I don't think that,
with its current philosophy and design, there's
going to be, similar to *Friendica*, any shortage
of third party FOSS innovations due to it's
plug-in capabilities being central to the design,
and aside from #Circles (the Matrix social
network -
https://www.kombuchaprivacy.com/circles/ ), it's
the only Fediverse social platform that actually
gets interpersonal relationships right. If you've
used #gplus, then you understand how simple,
powerful, and intimately distinct **(and
overlapping)** your online association with
others can be, mimicking how you actually
organize those associations for yourself #IRL. I
won't bother explain how true to form IRL
#recursive_circles are and how we naturally
attempt to actually implement those for ourselves
in online social media. * Have I left out
anything? Only about three times as much as I've
included - that's how much Fediverse development
has exploded in recent months - and that just the
independent #FOSS projects. I'm not counting
other traditional corporate endeavors like
#Wildebeest, #Flipboard, #WordPress, #Drupal, and
the as yet to appear #Tumblr, and #Imgur; all of
which will augment the dynamic of decentralized
social networking and communications in an
increasingly #privacy conscious world. The other
thing is, my fav list changes regularly - there's
always something that I discover that adds to all
of the wonderful choices we have, instead of
being hemmed in in mastoland as so many others
still are - let's continue to work to change that
perception for beginners, shall we? 🤘🤠🤘 I
always like to hear back with thoughts and
suggestions, and of course #Boosts and
#Quote_Posts help to spread [what some might
deem] valuable information even further into the
#Fediverse.
