2021-10-23 - The quiet gopher

With all the cool kids moving to this newfangled Gemini thing, it
seems somewhat more quiet on gopher. Funny that history appears to
echo variations of itself and gopher appears to be left again for
something more capable, just as in the early days of the www.
Ah well... No need to worry though... gopher will stick around. The
protocol is so simple that there will be always some cool people
who keep gopher servers running on their old toaster or their wifi
enabled toothbrush or something.
I like that about gopher, its plain simplicity. Even though it has
limitations and flaws, the protocol can be fully explained on the
back of a cereal box, and it would do exactly what it says on the
box. Nothing more.
Talking about toasters and cereal boxes... it's probably time for
some lunch...
