Not from Chicago, but elsewhere in the country, is an
excerpt of The Ten O'Clock News from KTVX Channel 4 in
Salt Lake City, UT, pertaining to the arrest of former
Beatle Paul McCartney in Tokyo for marijuana possession.
Introduced by anchor Bob Koop, a taped report from ABC
News' Mary Ann Maskery, relaying that McCartney and his
then-band, Wings, arrived at the airport for an 11-show
tour, scheduled for January 21st to February 2nd, with
100,000 tickets already sold. But at Narita International
Airport, customs officials found a total of 8 ounces (219
grams - almost half a pound!) of marijuana in his luggage
and jacket pocket, and he was arrested on the spot and
put in prison for at least one night. He faced up to five
years in prison and a fine of US $2,000 if convicted, or
else expelled from Japan. The planned concert tour ended
up cancelled, promoters losing up to US $420,000 in fees
alone.
(Postscript: Ultimately Paul's time in "the pokey" would
last nine days; he would be released without charge and
deported back to England on January 25th. The aftermath
would also lead to the end of Wings' live career, and
then their final breakup the next year.)
Co-anchor (a young Kathleen Sullivan, before she "made
it" on the national news stage) then gives an incredibly
bad segue from that report to the Presidential race
before the recording ends.
This aired on local Salt Lake City TV on Wednesday,
January 16th 1980 during the 10:00pm to 10:30pm (Mountain
Standard Time) timeframe.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary
mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early
home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily)
recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels (or other
cities occasionally); footage which would likely be lost
if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though
(mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the
entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs
with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for
historical preservation. For information on how to help
in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted
to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting)
video clips available for viewing in our online archive,
