Sometimes good people are responsible for good things.
Jimmy Rhatigan is the Editor of the Kilkenny Press and
the man responsible for publishing the findings on
Kilkenny excess deaths of accountant Patrick E. Walsh. In
my view, the dogged determination of these two men has
resulted in the following result:
The Taoiseach is to seek advice from the chief medical
officer over "concerns" around a spike in the number of
deaths in recent weeks.
As the Irish Examiner reports, Leo Varadkar has told the
D il an increase in the number of excess deaths "probably
relates" to the fact that RSV, influenza, and Covid are
all circulating at the moment, but he will be asking the
CMO Professor Breda Smyth to examine the issue.

Notwithstanding the arrogance of our Taoiseach, Leo
Varadkar pre-judging the findings of an inquiry into
excess deaths that has yet to commence this news is
welcome. The conversation surrounding excess deaths in
Ireland has been forced onto national platforms and into
the national conversation. Questions will now be asked
but let s remember why they are being asked. They will be
asked because of an accountant working feverishly on the
data in his spare time and a retired newspaperman brave
enough to publish the findings. Not because anyone in the
Irish Examiner or Taoiseach s office is worrying all
night about our death rates but because of these two men.
Jimmy is a fascinating and interesting character and I
must admit I have special gra for chatting with
newspapermen of the old school. He has book coming out
called Treasure Lost, Treasure Found that traces his life
experience from the death of his father as a mere toddler
to the gift of a grandson in his retirement years. You
