The Wednesday in Holy Week has traditionally been called
Spy Wednesday . The title acknowledges the action of
Judas, featured in the day s Gospel, who spies on Jesus
in order to betray our Blessed Lord to His enemies for
thirty pieces of silver.
Liturgically, the Church celebrates Tenebrae, which means
shadows in Latin, on the Wednesday of Holy Week. It is a
series of prayers anticipating the Easter Vigil, much
like a wake service takes place on the evening before a
funeral.
Typically, Tenebrae consists of the gradual extinguishing
of fifteen candles, with the church environment going
from light to darkness during a sequence of prayers, in
reverse of what will happen on the Easter Vigil, which
begins in total darkness and bursts into light with the
lighting of the Easter Candle.\\
Spy Wednesday is a good time for us to think about our
own Judas tendencies: our personal betrayals of Christ
through sin; our failures to maintain the disciplines of
Lent; our lack of personal investment in our spiritual
lives, etc. If we are honest with ourselves, we have not
risen to the challenge of developing a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ or living and defending
the Catholic faith in a way that shows we are true
believers and not just Catholics in name only.
If Judas would have repented of his betrayal, Jesus would
certainly have forgiven him! All he needed to do was
return and ask for God s forgiveness. Our sins may be
different from his, but we have the same burden of sin,
and Spy Wednesday reminds us to return to Christ with all
our hearts and admit, I too am in need of redemption. The
light of Christ needs to shine in my darkness.
