TONOPAH, Ariz. - An illegal cockfighting ring was busted |
|
in the west valley and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio |
|
is not taking this animal cruelty lightly. |
|
The fights were held in Tonopah, near 385th Avenue and |
|
Southern over the weekend. Nearly 70 people were |
|
arrested, including 20 suspected illegal aliens. |
|
|
|
According to the sheriff, this is the largest |
|
cockfighting bust in Maricopa County. |
|
|
|
Sheriff's Deputy Lindsey Smith said the investigation |
|
began at the property near Wintersburg and Baseline Roads |
|
after they received a report of an organized cockfighting |
|
event. |
|
|
|
On Saturday, detectives conducted air surveillance and |
|
executed a search warrant. |
|
|
|
Sheriff Joe Arpaio said 69 suspects were booked into the |
|
Fourth Avenue Jail for being present at a cockfight. He |
|
said it is believed that 20 of those arrested are illegal |
|
immigrants. |
|
|
|
Arpaio said when detectives arrived, an organized |
|
cockfight was taking place and numerous roosters were |
|
found caged in parked vehicles. |
|
|
|
The roosters would have blades tied to their feet so they |
|
could mortally wound the other rooster during a fight. |
|
More than 50 roosters had to be euthanized. |
|
|
|
"We do not give tickets out, we arrest them and put them |
|
in handcuffs, book them into our jail when they violate |
|
animal cruelty laws. I don't care if it's against dogs, |
|
cats, horses, roosters or what have you," Arpaio said. |
|
|
|
All of the suspects were booked for being present at a |
|
cockfight -- a class one misdemeanor. The two property |
|
owners, Apolinar Dominguez and Sara Lomas, are facing |
|
several felony charges. MCSO says both suspects are |
|
illegal immigrants. |
|
|
|
Some of the people in attendance at the cockfight even |
|
had their children with them. |
|
|
|
The Sheriff's office also says guns, drugs, and $25,000 |
|
in cash were found at the property. |
