Irving Burgie (pronounced: Bur-gee) is best known as the
composer of such classic Calypso songs as "Day-O" and

Page, Mantovani, Michiko Hamumura, Julio Iglesias, Marty
Franklin, and Catarina Valente are among the artists who
have recorded the music of Irving Burgie. Additional
songs by Burgie, including "The Seine," "El Matador,"
"The Wanderer," and "Wish You Were Here" were recorded by
such folk acts as The Kingston Trio, Jimmy Buffett and
Miriam Makeba. Irving Burgie composed music for the
Twentieth Century Fox film, "Island in the Sun" including
the title song. In 1966, Burgie wrote the lyrics for the
National Anthem of Barbados. In 1983, Burgie received an
award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Cherry Lane
Music for his songs having sold over 100 million copies
worldwide. In 1988 Burgie's music was featured in Tim
