DESCRIPTION:
EXPAND THE INQUIRY to include boy and men in the National
Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and
Girls
Press conference in Ottawa on December 8, 2016 featuring:
Chief Ernie Crey, Chair of the Coalition to Expand the
Inquiry, Cheam First Nation Leader and Author
Robert Samery, Chairperson and Justin Trottier, Executive
Director, Canadian Centre for Men and Families
***************************************
Aboriginal men are murdered significantly more often
compared to all other groups, and their homicides are
more rarely solved. Statistics Canada data on murdered
Indigenous peoples over a 29 year period (1982-2011)
shows that over 70% of murdered Indigenous Canadians were
men and boys.
Expand the Inquiry is a coalition campaigning to build a
growing consensus on the need for a gender-inclusive
Inquiry. The coalition submitted a letter pointing out
the startling facts and figures on missing and murdered
Indigenous men and boys to the Honourable Carolyn
Bennett, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, on
October 6, 2016. The letter has received no response as
yet.
Good public policy by the federal government is expected
to be built on all available data and not exclude half
the population. Until Indigenous boys and men in Canada
are addressed as a group that is at extreme risk today by
way of a well-resourced inquiry, the roots of violence in
and against aboriginal communities will not be clear nor
will the development of meaningful solutions be possible.
We are asking that you support a motion or take other
action that will Expand the Inquiry to be inclusive of
all genders. The attached document provides an overview
of our coalition goals, members and activities in Ottawa
during the period of December 6 - 8 , 2016.

Mission
The Canadian Centre for Men and Families (CCMF) is the
country s first hub for the health and well-being of
boys, men, fathers and families. The Centre is an open,
inclusive and safe space, providing therapy and
counselling, peer support, a legal clinic, fathering
programs, mentorship and support services for male
victims of trauma and violence. We provide services,
research, advocacy, outreach and public education on all
aspects of men s issues.
Vision
Our vision focuses on three critical areas:
1. Reduce suicide among men at high-risk through
intervention programs that confront the barriers that men
face in seeking help.
2. Empower fathers undergoing separation and divorce
through legal clinics and fathering groups that
strengthen the father-child relationship, while working
to promote positive social attitudes toward fatherhood
3. Support men who are experiencing domestic abuse and
other forms of trauma while working with other agencies
to improve services for this population.
