Two years after a popular uprising in Sudan forced out
Omar al Bashir, militias in the country refuse to put
down their arms. Mistrustful of the transitional
government, they demand justice in exchange for peace.

The Sudanese Liberation Army and the Sudanese government
have not fought a major battle since 2019. But some SLA
soldiers are not ready to put down their arms. 22-year-
old Maryam Saleh Adam Abdallah joined the S.L.A. three
years ago to avenge her father: 'The government deceived
us, they made us flee from our lands', she claims. Some
claim the violence that started with the Darfur genocide
never truly ended: 'The government came to destroy our
village. There were no peaceful areas to go and study
in', says SLA doctor Ismail. The fighting has meant that
most NGOs are unwilling to enter the area, leading to a
shortage of medical workers: 'This area has zero health
coverage and it's been neglected for a very long time',
says MSF worker Anna Bylund.
