down their arms. Mistrustful of the transitional |
|
government, they demand justice in exchange for peace. |

The Sudanese Liberation Army and the Sudanese government |
|
have not fought a major battle since 2019. But some SLA |
|
soldiers are not ready to put down their arms. 22-year- |
|
old Maryam Saleh Adam Abdallah joined the S.L.A. three |
|
years ago to avenge her father: 'The government deceived |
|
us, they made us flee from our lands', she claims. Some |
|
claim the violence that started with the Darfur genocide |
|
never truly ended: 'The government came to destroy our |
|
village. There were no peaceful areas to go and study |
|
in', says SLA doctor Ismail. The fighting has meant that |
|
most NGOs are unwilling to enter the area, leading to a |
|
shortage of medical workers: 'This area has zero health |
|
coverage and it's been neglected for a very long time', |
|
says MSF worker Anna Bylund. |
