Venice, Los Angeles - February 15, 2024: In Rose Avenue,
a joint effort by the Los Angeles Department of Public
Works and Clean Harbors Environmental Inc. is tackling
the homeless encampment issue. This action aligns with
the city's goal to manage homelessness and ensure public
cleanliness.
Workers, in hazmat suits, followed strict safety
protocols during the cleanup. The city had previously
alerted the community, asking for personal items to be
cleared from the area, with a warning that left items
would be removed.
Forty-eight hours prior to the operation, the city had
disseminated notices informing the community of the
impending cleanup and urging the removal of personal
belongings from the designated areas. The notices
clarified that items left behind would be collected by
city personnel.
Homeless individuals received a 15-minute notice to
relocate their belongings before cleanup began, with law
enforcement assisting in moving people and sanitation
workers clearing unclaimed items. The effort focused on
separating hazardous from non-hazardous waste for
thorough cleaning.
The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority provided
outreach to the homeless, while the police ensured the
operation's safety and compliance, without issuing any
citations. This cleanup reflects Los Angeles'
comprehensive approach to homelessness, combining
immediate measures with long-term solutions.
