Protesters in southern Italy have clashed with police |

during demonstrations sparked by poor conditions at a |
|
local rubbish dump. The government blamed the facility's |
|
state on bad management from a regional operator. |
|
Prime Minister Berlusconi promised a fast solution to the |
|
crisis in Terzigno, where protesters have set vehicles |
|
ablaze, burned Italian flags and hurled stones and |
|
firecrackers at police. Berlusconi pledged millions of |
|
euros in compensation and denied there has been any |
|
health risk to residents. |
