Voice of America Radio Scripts

The Voice of America is the flagship U.S. government-
funded international broadcaster, producing content for
radio, television and the Internet. This collection aims
to present a selection of radio scripts spanning almost
three decades, before VOA s expansion into other media.
These scripts were scanned from microfilm copies in the
Library of Congress covering the years 1953 1980 on 113
reels (LOC call number: microfilm 01769).
The images have been lightly edited to correct uneven
lighting, remove edge shadows, dust speckles and other
stray marks, etc., and cropped to standard letter size (8
11 inches).
The scripts cover a wide variety of subjects. News
Analysis and Backgrounder scripts focus on current events
and issues. Other topics include book and film reviews,
agriculture, science, new products, American politics,
sports, performing arts, etc.
This collection notably seems not to include news reports
from VOA s overseas correspondents (staff and freelance
stringers) or U.S.-based reporters in Washington and
around the country. Missing, for example, are the short
correspondent reports CRs in newsroom parlance typically
running 45 70 seconds and tailored for newscasts.
Scripts lacking dateline information, either in the title
or introduction, are generally presumed to be datelined
Washington, following VOA s move from New York in 1954.
In the material reviewed so far, there is no indication
of whether a particular script was actually broadcast in
English or any other language. (VOA s radio programs have
been transmitted around the world in dozens of languages
since the service was established two months after the
U.S. entry into World War II.)
As a 30-year veteran of The Voice, I am pleased to be
able to offer what is for now a rather small and not
necessarily representative sampling of this material. You
may also be interested in four related collections: VOA
Newscasts[1] (audio only, 2014 present, plus some earlier
examples), VOA Our World[2] (a weekly science magazine
program, audio and text, 2004 2010), Voice of America
Editorials[3] (text only, 2004 2014), and VOA Music Time
in Africa[4] (audio only, 2006 2008).
