Summary: | |
Attitude refers | |
to the thinking process in an individual while behaviour
is the practical | |
display of such thinking pattern. Every individual human
being has a unique | |
filter in his mind and his actions are a result of some
external stimuli. If a | |
society displays tolerance, respect and social cohesion
then the behaviour of | |
its people make the society a peaceful and progressive
society. Unfortunately,
no attention is paid to develop positive attitude among
the children at school | |
and college level. Most of the parents also fail to
inculcate the desired | |
behavioural change among the children. Depression and
intolerance are most | |
common in our society which results in harsh and negative
behaviour. | |

Radio FM 92.6 Mardan, | |
Pakhtunkhwa Radio FM 98 Swat and radio Pakhtunkhwa FM 91
Razmak and North | |
Waziristan, but for those who are listening to us for the
first time are to be | |
told that our objective in this program and workshops
indifferent universities
sponsored by Center for Research and Security Studies
Islamabad, is that | |
through this program CRSS wants to create peace,
progress, tolerance, social cohesion, love in
this country, interfaith harmony rule of law and
constitution of Pakistan in
our homeland and how to achieve this end is possible only
if we display these | |
things then we can achieve our aim and conflicts can be
resolved. We wish all | |
people to have equal rights irrespective of gender and
group. On One hand this radio program is an
endeavour by CRSS while on the other hand, with same
objective in view, CRSS also
organizes training workshops in different universities
for youth. It is aimed | |
through these session that youth may learn these lessons
and apply and spread | |
it further in the society. Moreover, electronic and print
media is employed and | |
articles are written and published in different news
papers. It is our | |
collective responsibility to spread such awareness. We
bring different topics in
Ulasi Taroon and our topic for today is change of
attitude and behaviour for
social change. It is to see how much change can be
brought through a positive
change in the beahviour. We have invited our worthy
guests to discuss this | |
topic. Our first guest is a writer, journalist and social
activist. He is | |
Shakeel Waheed Ullah and we often bother him to come and
discuss such topics | |
with us. I welcome you in the program.
Shakeel: Thank you very
much. | |
Shahab: Our second | |
guest is a trainee by CRSS workshops and he is here to
share his experience. He
is Izhar Ahmad. I welcome you in the program.
Izhar: Thank you for | |
inviting me here. | |
Shahab: Dear listeners,
you can also participate in the program and can ask any
question by dialing our
telephone number 0919214199. I should have told you at
the beginning that right
now you can also listen and watch this program through
our face book page | |
Pakhtunkhwa radio face book.com. Moreover you can also
send us your text | |
messages. The procedure is such that you have to type KR
and give a space and | |
then write your name and message. You can send this
message through 8583. Mr.
Shakeel, when we talk about attitude and beahviour, what
do we mean by it? | |
Shakeel: I am thankful | |
to CRSS and its team for inviting us to discuss such
important topics. In human
life, beahviour plays a vital role. Behaviour can take
you to positive or | |
negative side. Habits and attitude are different. Habits
are associated with | |
human nature while beahviour keeps changing. Beahviour is
the solid reason for | |
change in human life. It is the basis for making a
difference between good and bad.
Certainly, when we talk about attitude, it plays an
important part in promoting
good and spreading bad as well.
Shahab: Izhar, you had | |
been a part of CRSS training workshops and therefore I
want you to share with | |
our listeners your own experience and experience of
others in regard to change
of behaviour. What major learning you had there?
Izhar: I want to say | |
that CRSS is a major platform and it can play an
important role for the youth.
The reason is that different students from different
universities with | |
different backgrounds, cultures and faiths come together
and indulge in | |
dialogue and discussion. They discuss different issues
and seek solutions. My | |
own experience says that CRSS is a ray of hope for the
coming generations and
youth. It provides an effective platform.
Shahab: When CRSS | |
gathers these different students, it provides an
opportunity which was never
there during your academic life?
Izhar: CRSS runs a campaign
for the youth of the whole province and it gathers
students from different departments
and backgrounds. These students have expertise in their
respective subjects and
he tries to resolve the problems in the society. It is a
good platform and | |
great opportunity for the youth.
Shahab: Shakeel, you | |
talked about beahviour and its impact on the society. To
change this behaviour | |
for good, what steps should be taken?
Shakeel: Behaviour in | |
itself is impersonal and it depends on the human to make
it good or bad. Behavior
is often a reaction to an action. It emanates as reaction
to some behaviour by | |
others. If you receive a positive behaviour then reaction
will also be positive | |
and vice versa. Our bad luck is that neither at schools
or at home we work on | |
behaviour. Ta international level we can see in the
developed countries, most
of them stress attitude along with education. Bit we have
a formula type | |
education in our country and our teachers do not pay
attention to change of | |
behaviour. Rather we should stress on developing good
behaviour. Behaviour is
not only for children but adults should also think about
their behaviour with | |
others and all around in our society. I personally think
that it is such a | |
process which can be diverted to good results and it is
only possible only of | |
we think individually about our own behaviour and hold
ourselves accountable
for our behaviour. | |
Shahab: Izhar, You told
us about the workshops by CRSS and its positive impact.
What did you feel in | |
your behaviour after these workshops?
Izhar: Before these | |
workshops by CRSS, I have done Master in sociology which
is in it a study of | |
the society and all related problems with suggested
solution and I had some | |
basic knowledge about society but after attending
workshops, I personally feel
that the most positive change is awareness about duties
as a citizen. I came to | |
know about my individual responsibilities as a
responsible citizen and how can
I be productive for my country. I know about my own share
and my role as a | |
member of society. I became aware about the legal status
as a citizen and basic | |
duties and rights. Moreover, when we interacted with
students from different backgrounds
and cultures, we were able to interlink these factors and
e leaned new things | |
about their cultures. All it was possible only due to
CRSS and otherwise we | |
were deprived of these valuable things.
Shahab: When we talk | |
about attitude and behaviour, what is the difference?
Shakeel: There is a great
deal of difference between habits and attitudes. Habits
are genetics and can be | |
hereditary and these pass on. We can say that 25% habits
can be either earlier | |
or later in life but attitude is something which is
totally different. Attitude
is dependent on daily temperament of the society and it
keeps changing with the
trends in the society. If actions of the society are
received in positive | |
manner then reaction will be positive. Attitude is not
permanent while habits
are permanent. Behaviour is a reaction triggered by the
action in the society. | |
Shahab: You say that | |
habits cannot be changed?
Shakeel: Habits can be | |
changed and there is almost 25% space for the change
while behaviour can be | |
changed hundred percent.
Shahab: Our youth is emotional
and are not ready to listen to others but try to impose
their own ideas upon | |
others. Due to these workshops, did you experience any
change in such behaviour
and readiness to listen to others about anything?
Izhar: I may respond by | |
saying that beahviour is based on whatever is in the mind
but our response to | |
actions around us depends on the society. You mentioned
emotion and tolerance | |
and in different visions and objectives of CRSS were to
create tolerance among
us. When I took part in these workshops at different
platforms, I realized that
along with our culture and religion, we have to pay
respect to others. We will
make progress when we value others and respect their
opinions. Unless we | |
develop this trend, we will be faced with conflicts and
divisions. Generally | |
CRSS gave us an opportunity to enrich ourselves with
tolerance and appreciating
others. It taught us to behave softly and respect others.
Shahab: Listeners, it | |
is time to listen to a report prepared by Inam Ullah Khan.
Field | |
based research report | |
Experts say that | |
civilized society is that where people have positive
behaviour with each other
with no discrimination and they try to have social
cohesion. Professor Noor
Sana says that social behaviour is a large topic and
people have different | |
behaviour about things but we have a collectivist society
as a whole, | |
Social | |
attitude is a broad topic and some are positive and
others are negative. But we
can call our society as traditional and collectivist. It
is not individualistic.
Such societies have positive and negative qualities.
Positive aspect is that we
have children and weaker groups and collectivist
societies always support weak
people. We should help and support such people and not to
suppress and more | |
dependent. | |
Professor Noor added | |
that unfortunately in our society some people do not
support weaker groups and
adopt negative thoughts. To end this trend we need
awareness and education,
The | |
word used for special people is bad in itself and
sometime such words hurt his
self esteem. If somebody is mentally retarded, our people
call him mad and | |
lunatic. Such labeling can make them mad and such word
affect the mentality and
attitude of such people. It is negative beahviour in our
society and we have | |
not train our kids. We lack education indeed.
Professor Ayesha Khursheed is an educationist
too who says that in globalized era social cohesion is
need of the time and it is
not the responsibility of state but civil society and
family should work for | |
it, | |
It | |
is our need in the globalized system and social cohesion
is important for | |
survival. Our people should have enough tolerance in
regard to culture, | |
religion and minorities and disable people. The question
is how to achieve | |
cohesion? It is not the sole duty of just one institute
but it is an integrated | |
process and it includes our educational institutes,
parental institute and
media too. But all these institute need awareness.
Professor Noor says | |
that ours is adverse society and to improve social
behaviour we need to adopt
values of acceptance and tolerance,
A | |
garden has different kinds of flowers and it is the
beauty of the garden. | |
Similarly different groups and sects in the country make
it beautiful. | |
Government should promote this multi cultural society and
tolerance is most | |
important for harmony in the society wh9ch require
tolerating each other. It is
the beauty of the civilized society. I think the biggest
sign of a civilized | |
society is to accept and tolerate others.
It was Inam Ullah Khan | |
reporting for CRSS from Peshawar.
Shahab: Dear listeners,
welcome back once again in Ulasi Taroon after the report
by Inam Ullah. Our | |
topic for today is change of behaviour for social change.
Dr. Sadia is on | |
telephone line with us. She is a psychiatric and we would
like to talk t her | |
about the topic under discussion. I welcome you in the
program. | |
Sadia: Thank you very | |
much. | |
Shahab: We are | |
discussing role of beahviour for social change with our
worthy guests Shakeel and
Izhar. But I would like you to tell our listeners about
attitude and behaviour
and the difference between these two terms?
Sadia: Attitude and | |
behavior are both about the human conduct. There is
thinking behind these two
actions. Such thoughts harness attitude in the mind which
results in behaviour. | |
Change will come first in the thoughts. We can observe in
our society that | |
depression is very high. Depression is not only
individual but it may be on
national scale too. You might have noted that most of us
are having negative | |
attitudes. We often talk about negative things and
destruction of institutes
and country. Depression is the main cause of bad
behaviour. I feel that our
attitude is moulded by our negative thoughts and
obviously everything seem
negative. Such negativity results in negative actions.
People might have good | |
life and family but even then they are not satisfied. The
fact might be | |
different but negative attitude is adopted. People resort
to bribes when they | |
see it commonly in the society.
Shahab: Please tell our listeners that to be a peace
builder in the society, what behaviour and habits are
required? | |
Sadia: First of all if | |
someone wishes to bring peace in the society, he has to
make peace within. Such
people should not object to their own personality and try
to reform. People should
take pity on themselves. We have negative attitudes about
ourselves, our income | |
and personality. We should be thankful for whatever we
have. If you are angry | |
with yourself and devalue yourself all the time and blame
yourself for failures | |
will result in negativity. First of all positive thinking
should be adopted. | |
Such people can never change the society for good.
Shahab: If we talk | |
about a good society, what characteristics should be
adopted? | |
Sadia: I think a | |
tradition of our Holy Prophet says that we should adopt
things for others as we | |
wish them for ourselves. I think it is a good basis for a
good society. Everybody
like the best for himself and it is empathy to wish the
same for others. If we | |
could feel the needs and desires of others then t is
empathy. If we suffer from
the lack of things then we must also realize the needs of
others. First of all | |
feelings must be there for others. We must think about
our thoughts and | |
feelings. | |
Shahab: How can parents
help in promoting positive change in the behaviour?
Sadia: Role of parents | |
is utmost important and I think that 90% change can be
brought by parents. The
problem is that whatever parents tell their children to
do, they never do it | |
themselves. Most of the parents blame their children for
use of social media all | |
the time while parents themselves indulge in such acts.
Remember that children
follow their parents and observe their parents. If the
father takes bribes then
children will learn to do it as well. Children follow
their parents in actions
and mere words are not important. Most of the women talk
for hours on telephone | |
and instruct their children to study at home. Such words
will have no value for | |
the children. | |
Shahab: Thank you very | |
much for talking to us. Shakeel, Dr. Sadia discussed the
topic very well and | |
many more points were highlighted in the report too. DR.
Sadia referred to the | |
role of parents for training their children. How an
individual behaviour affect
the society? | |
Shakeel: Dr. Sadia | |
discussed the topic psychologically with good comments
but when we talk about | |
an individual behaviour and his contribution, every
person is a part of the | |
society and it affects the society. For a better society,
basic trait is | |
respect for humanity and tolerance. We lack listening
power and we are not | |
ready to listen to others rather we try to impose our
will on others. Respect
for humanity, respect and tolerance are the most
important things for a progressive
society. If these qualities are embedded in my
personality and I display them
while dealing with all around us then our beahviour will
be based on respect | |
and tolerance. Such traits are the first step towards a
good society. Man is a | |
part of the society. | |
Shahab: Izhar, what is | |
your view about our society and tolerance as desired, how
can it help promote | |
peace and progress? | |
Izhar: You are | |
referring to tolerance and the basic thing is our
religion which teaches us
about humanity. Al Quran and tradition instruct us about
tolerance. For | |
instance, when our Holy Prophet was wounded in the bazaar
of Taif and Allah | |
sent angles of doom to obey his order to destroy these
people. But Our Holy | |
Prophet said that may be people in their coming
generations may be good people.
It is the highest display of tolerance.
Shahab: Every religion
stresses tolerance. | |
Izhar: Attitude was | |
defined by Dr. Sadia that positive attitude can help the
society as a whole. | |
Good attitude lead us towards tolerance which is a must
for a peaceful society.
Shakeel also said that tolerance is necessary for
resolving our problems. This
education about tolerance should start from within and we
should identify our | |
role in regard to society. How can we improve our
attitude to perform our role
as an individual in the society? I think that tolerance
will spread if we have | |
the opportunities to spread our messages. We have to
educate our coming | |
generations to inculcate tolerance. If our subordinate
commits a mistake then | |
we should think about our behaviour. We often rebuke the
children for a mistake | |
and we should educate them. We should never insult a
child in front of others.
Shahab: Such children | |
grow in fear and lose confidence.
Izhar: Such children cannot
express themselves and these are suppressed. Such
children become fearful of
many things. We see such problems in our society.
Shahab: You are right | |
about your assessment and lack of confidence among such
children. | |
Shakeel, right to | |
expression is the basic right but what is your view about
expression with | |
responsibility? | |
Shakeel: This question
again refers to developmental process of children. We
have to consider the | |
standard of growth and development. Whatever mistakes we
commit in our homes, | |
we have to consider it. When child asks a question at
home, we try to snub and | |
suppress him. It means that he will not dare to ask
question in the future. It
is the first blunder we commit at our homes. This factor
has lasting effect of character
building. We all have speaking power but lack listening
power at home and | |
academia. There are many problems in institutes and
students cannot ask | |
questions from their teachers and such students may face
many problems. I do | |
not understand what kind of society these people want to
have. Positive | |
attitudes are direly in need at school, Hujra and family
level. Masjid is also | |
an institute and we learn many things from there. Hujra
culture is destroyed in
the name of progress. It is a good process of education.
If the elder tries | |
again to establish Hujra culture then our system may be
saved. Role of parent | |
is very important although all parents cannot provide
ideal situation at home. When
I face a problem at behaviour level then I consult
psychologist. I undertake counseling
session and try to obey the advice. It helps me and my
connected people. I | |
think that when we identify any such negative trend then
we should consult a | |
psychologist. | |
Shahab: When we talk | |
about gender equality then how can we carry along all
kinds of gender through
our behaviour? | |
Izhar: We can see in | |
our history that based on gender, we commit injustice. We
have exploited female | |
and transgender in our history. People should assess and
educate themselves. | |
Gender equality refers to equal role to men and women in
the progress of the | |
society. In our Pashtoon society we have limited the role
of women to home. | |
Woman can prove strong support to men and they have a
vital role in the | |
progress of the country. Someone has said that give me an
educated mother and I | |
will give you a successful nation. Another point is the
status of transgender | |
in our society. There is no proper law and policy for
these people. We should
treat them as equal human being.
Shahab: What is the | |
role of our academia in changing the beahviour?
Shakeel: We had been | |
kids in the past and we will start from children. A child
is more familiar and | |
impressed with his teacher than his parent. An early
school plays an important
role for his development. But unfortunately our schools
pay no special attention
to behaviour. It is run through formula type learning.
Character building is | |
totally ignored. Unless we pay attention to growth and
development at school | |
level, we cannot have change in behaviour.
Shahab: What could be | |
the effect of civic engagement on change of behaviour?
Izhar: Civic engagement
means thinking about other members of the society and
working for their | |
welfare. It is the basic thing for progress.
Shahab: Please also | |
mention the role of youth in this area?
Izhar: I may refer to | |
my personal activities in Bari Kot where we are involved
in civic engagement. | |
We observed that child labor is common at our native
town. We identified such
children and enrolled them in school. People are now
supporting us and appreciate
our efforts. Civic engagement can be done by engaging
youth for the welfare of
the society. It is said that 83% learning by human being
is through | |
observation. If such welfare acts are done in our society
then it can compel | |
other people to engage too.
Shahab: I want Shakeel | |
to give his opinion about the efforts and activities of
CRSS? | |
Shakeel: I think these | |
activities by CRSS are helpful to the society. If only 5%
people now listening | |
to us bring a change in their behaviour then it will be a
success. | |
Shahab: Thank you very | |
much for being with us. It is good bye for now,
