"Duga" was a Soviet over-the-horizon radar system - a
part of the Soviet missile defense early-warning radar
network, if not more.
Two operational Duga radars were deployed; one near
Chernobyl and Chernihiv in the Ukrainian SSR (present-day
Ukraine) - the other in eastern Siberia.
-The system operated from July 1976 to December 1989.
The Duga systems broadcast in the shortwave radio bands
between 7 & 19 MHz. The Duga Radar had a capacity to
convert and deliver 10 MW of electromagnetic energy into
the atmosphere.
The other unknown for the time being.
The signals it emanated was picked up by HAM operators
world-wide, and was notorious for it's distinct 10Hz
repetitive "tapping noise" - which shortwave-listeners
later dubbed "The Russian Woodpecker" due to it's
constant and familiar interference on radio-broadcasts.
NATO military intelligence referred to it by the
reporting name STEEL WORK or STEEL YARD.
The system was run in secret during it's run-time, and
was not publicly confirmed until after the fall of the
Soviet Union, though many listeners and members of
intelligentsia agencies world-wide were aware.
Fedor Alexandrovich and Chad Gracia investigate links,
history and theories surrounding The Duga Radar,
including circumstances between it and the neighboring
Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
The production was halted by the intervention due to
threats from the Secret Police, the Ukrainian uprising at
the time, where, to top it off; one of the crew-members
was hit by a sniper. -Two bystanders near him were killed
in this episode.
