KBVO Channel 42 - Commercial Breaks, 12/24/1985 |

Commercial breaks taken from a Christmas Eve 1985 "8 |
|
O'Clock Movie" presentation of "Holiday Inn" on what was |
|
then-independent station KBVO in Austin, Texas. |
|
|
|
At the time, KBVO was owned by Austin Television Company, |
|
primarily controlled by two (legendary) Texas station |
|
owners, Darrold Cannan, Jr., owner of KAMR-TV in |
|
Amarillo, and Mike McKinnon, who owned KBMT-TV in |
|
Beaumont and KIII-TV in Corpus Christi at the time. Less |
|
than a year after this was recorded, KBVO joined the Fox |
|
network as a charter affiliate. |
|
|
|
A few years later, McKinnon would sell his stake to the |
|
station's (late) General Manager, Steve Beard. Cannan and |
|
Beard sold the station in late 1994 to Granite |
|
Broadcasting Company, and the following year, KBVO-TV |
|
swapped affiliations with longtime CBS affiliate KTBC |
|
(channel 7) whose ownership at the time had an alliance |
|
with Fox. KBVO then changed their call letters to the |
|
current-day KEYE-TV. The station was later sold directly |
|
to the CBS network in 2000 and spent time as one of two |
|
O&Os in Austin (ironically enough, KTBC would be sold to |
|
Fox in 1997 and is currently the market's only O&O, as |
|
well as Fox's smallest full-service station, but not |
|
their smallest market). Currently, Sinclair Broadcast |
|
Group owns channel 42. |
|
|
|
The station was using "Hello News" from Gari |
|
Communications for its imaging music, along with graphics |
|
from the CASCOM library many stations took advantage of |
|
in the pre-CGI era. Apparently, their use of Hello News |
|
wasn't actually licensed, and they were forced to drop it |
|
a couple of years later once Gari got word and issued a |
|
C&D to the station. GM Steve Beard was allegedly known |
|
for being a creative type, but also, if he liked |
|
something, a "do it and ask questions later" type. KBVO |
|
had a full-time staff announcer, Ken Cinco, who was the |
|
voice of most of their promos. |
|
|
|
The original KBVO is unrelated to the current-day |
|
MyNetworkTV affiliate KBVO operated by Nexstar Media |
|
Group and a sister station to KXAN. |
|
