A notebook belonging to James L. Kitchen while studying
at the Coll ge de France. The notebook contains notes
from lectures by Rene Laennec and Francois Broussais, and
are written in French. James L. Kitchen graduated from
the University of Pennsylvania College of Medicine in
1822. After studying medicine in Europe, he came back to
Philadelphia in 1824 and became a prominent physician and
homeopath. Kitchen played a large role in helping
establish the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania
and was granted an honorary degree in homeopathy by the
College in 1856. The Homeopathic Medical College of
Pennsylvania was founded in 1848 to provide standardized
training in the emerging system of medicine called
homeopathy. In 1869 the Homeopathic Medical College of
Pennsylvania and Hahnemann Medical College (founded in
1867) merged to create a new institution called Hahnemann
Medical College of Philadelphia.
