In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta |
|
Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project |
|
to document the personal and professional experiences of |
|
Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's |
|
damaged transportation system. This is an interview with |
|
Steve Phillips who was a Lead Worker at the Salinas |
|
Maintenance Station in Caltrans District 5. The night of |
|
the earthquake Phillips reported back to work and with |
|
others fixed a sinkhole on Highway 156 that appeared |
|
after the earthquake. On the October 21st he volunteered |
|
to assist at Cypress Structure where he assisted on |
|
fencing off the structure so that construction crews |
|
could work safely. |
