In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta
Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project
to document the personal and professional experiences of
Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's
damaged transportation system. At the time of this
interview Cliff Romano was a Senior Transportation
Engineer with Caltrans District Office 6 in Fresno. His
position with Caltrans was a unit that was on loan to the
California Highway Patrol for Accident Investigation. He
was asked by California Highway Patrol on October 25th if
he was willing to volunteer his services as part of
special investigation team that was established to
investigate and document the earthquake disaster. He
accepted the assignment, and reported to the Cypress
Structure. In the interview he describes what he saw and
documented for the special investigation team. Later he
investigated the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge for the
special investigation team.
