In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta
Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project
to document the personal and professional experiences of
Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's
damaged transportation system. At the time of this
interview Bob Reyes was an Equipment Operator with
Caltrans at the Gilroy Maintenance Station. When the Loma
Prieta earthquake happened, he was driving in downtown
San Jose he then made it to his home in Gilroy and was
called back to work, where his crew was sent to repair
the approaches to the Sergants over-crossing. In the days
after the earthquake Reyes cleared slides and sealed
cracks on Highways 17, 9, and 152 in Santa Cruz County.
