Description: In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma
Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history
project to document the personal and professional
experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore
the State's damaged transportation system. Steve Whipple
was an Associate Bridge Engineer working out of the
Richmond Office when the Loma Prieta Earthquake occurred.
In this interview Steve discusses his responsibilities
for the northern portion of the collapsed Cypress Street
Viaduct and overseeing the shoring of the structure.
Steve also reflects upon his discovery of the survivor
Buck Helms in the collapsed viaduct and the subsequent
effort to rescue him from his crushed vehicle.
