Description: In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma |
|
Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history |
|
project to document the personal and professional |
|
experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore |
|
the State's damaged transportation system. Steve Whipple |
|
was an Associate Bridge Engineer working out of the |
|
Richmond Office when the Loma Prieta Earthquake occurred. |
|
In this interview Steve discusses his responsibilities |
|
for the northern portion of the collapsed Cypress Street |
|
Viaduct and overseeing the shoring of the structure. |
|
Steve also reflects upon his discovery of the survivor |
|
Buck Helms in the collapsed viaduct and the subsequent |
|
effort to rescue him from his crushed vehicle. |
