Description: In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma
Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history
project to document the personal and professional
experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore
the State's damaged transportation system. Ed Snow was
the supervisor at the Caldecott Tunnel at the time of the
Loma Prieta Earthquake on October 17, 1989. In this
interview he discusses his reaction to the earthquake and
his and his crew's response to inspect the tunnels,
operate the radios, and field the telephone calls that
came from Caltrans offices, the CHP and local police
agencies. He explains the difficulties of radio
communications between other offices and base stations in
the earthquakes aftermath. Ed Snow acknowledges the
lighter-than-usual traffic due to the World Series
baseball game and offers suggestions for revising
communication methods between the offices and yards for
future disasters.
