Description: In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma
Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history
project to document the personal and professional
experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore
the State's damaged transportation system. Bob Travis was
a Senior Bridge Engineer based out of Farmers' Market in
Sacramento when the Loma Prieta Earthquake occurred. In
this interview Bob Travis explains the extent of the
damage on the highways and bridges throughout the Bay
Area attributed to the earthquake. Being a Bridge
Engineer, his views of the earthquake damage are
important in understanding the damage of the San
Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge and the collapsed Cypress
Street Structure. Bob Travis also explains the initial
confusion setting up a coordinated system with various
other agencies such as the CHP and Oakland Fire
Department to recover casualties as well as organize
contractors to stabilize the collapsed Cypress Street
Structure. Also of note in Bob's interview is his
involvement with the rescue of Buck Helm from his partly
crushed car in the Cypress Structure.
